Americans Sing as

Paris, July 22. Wishing to honor
! the American forces on the Alsne- I
I Marne front. General Mangin placed a
I renowned French Infantry division*
I between two American divisions when
| the attack against the Germans be
i gan. Ihe Americans proved them
selves worthy of the honor given
them. The line conduct and high
spirits of tlie Americans, who sang
as they crossed marshes and rivers
with water up to their shoulders,
excited the admiration and enthus
iasm of all.
, "The finest thing of the combat was
the dash of the Americans." writes
Lieutenant Entraygucs, special cor
respondent at the front for the
lemps, in describing the opening of
the great counteroffensive. "It was a
tine thing to see those grand fellows,
with their tunics throw® off and
their shirt sleeves rolled up above
their elbows, wading tiie rivers with
the water to their shoulders and
throwing themselves on the boche like
bulldogs.
.' A n ,Y one who has seen such a
sight, lie goes on, "knows what the
American Army is good for hence
forth and to the end of the war. At
.u I ,'' of these men, magnificent
in their youth, physical force, good
temper, and dash, the Germans fled
with eve_ry leg' or surrendered with
out awaiting the order to throw
away their arms and take off therir
suspenders, which is the first thing a
prisoners is told to do, in order that
he may be compelled to kee his hands
en ', Ployed and out of mischief.
The Germans hurried toward our
lines, gripping their trousers, hag-
Sard, and made with terror.
