Almost Thirty Have Petition
ed to Have Hunting Stopped
For Two-Year Period
Petitions for the closing of dis
tricts to the shooting of ruffed grovse
tor two years, In order to prevent
extermination of the bird In Penn
sylvania, have been filed from 28
counties with the Game Commissioh,
anfl in a short time It Is expected
that other counties will have filed
their papers. The manner In which
che plan to save the birds has been
popularly supported, has been much
commented upon here. It is prob
able that when the State Game Com
mission holds its annual July session
that all petitions will be acted upon.
The belief is that the state will be
closed with the exception of Phila
delphia, where there are no grouse
except in captivity.
According to officers of the State
Game Commission the situation is
regard to the petitioning is in very
satisfactory shape. Letters have
come here from many sections of the
state endorsing the plans and urg
ing that the commission g£t behind
It. Some of these letters have come
from active sportsrhen and men who
have favored many game laws and
conservation. They bespeak an in
terest not often noted.
The counties where under pre
vious orders no grouse may be hunt
ed this year are Eqp.ver, Butler, Law
rence. The counties which have filed
petitions to close for two years are
Armstrong, Bedford, Blair, Bradford,
Bucks, Cambria, Cameron Carbon,
Clearfield, Clinton, Columbia, Elk,
Fayette, Forest, Fulton, Indiana,
Jefferson, Lancaster, Lebanon. Lu
zerne, Montgomery, Perry, Schuyl
kill, Somerset, SulUvan, Susque
hanna, Wayne, Wyoming. The coun
ties of Berks, Washington and Ve
nango have filed incomplete peti
tions and papers are in circulation in
Allegheny, Cumberland, Dauphin,
Lycoming, Clarion. Union. Snyder.
Northumberland, Chester, Tioga and
in counties in the Juniata and Dela
ware valleys. Reports from Western
Pennsylvania generally tell of in
terest in the signing of the petitions.
These papers are expected in when
the are filed.
State Game Commission officials
say that it is of the utmost impor
tance to have the whole state closed
and that counties should unite so
that there may be no places where
the ruffed grouse may be hunted,
while the rest are closed.
