"The Machine That Thinks" is the
title of the film that take.* the audi
ence through the evolution of ac
counting from the stone age to the
present time. The picture is mid
to be one of the most interesting
commercial films yet produced, com
bining animated humorous and
mechanical drawings with straight
photography. The mystery of the
adding machine, the machine that

freed the human mind from the bur
den of figure drudgery, is revealed
for the first time. Since adding ma
chines are now almost as widely used
as typewriters, the interest in this
picture among businessmen is gen
eral.

district advertising manager of the
company, will show the picture.
William Seward Burroughs, in
ventor of the first adding and list
ing machine, was born in Uochester,
N. Y.. in 1858. As a young man he
wrestled with mental additions ;n a
bank in Aubtirn, N. Y„ until his in
ventive genius conceived an adding
machine that would work. He went
to Sl..Louie, Mo., where in the little
machine shop of Joseph Boyer, now
president of the Burroup-'is Adding
Machine Company, he drew the plans
and made the parts of the first prac
tical adding machine. The mechani
cal skill of Burroughs was so great
that to-day the shaft centers in the

modern machine are the same to a.
thousandth of an inch as they were
in the lirst model. Of course, the op
erating principle has not changed.
In 188H tho American Arithmome
ter Company was organized and the
manufacture of Burroughs machines
began in earnest. In 1904 the plant
moved to Detroit and the name was
changed to the Burroughs Adding
Machine Company, in honor of tho
inventor.
When Mr. Burroughs first thought
of the adding machine, he thought
of banks as the only prospective buy
ers. Last year the Burroughs Com
pany manufactured and marketed
to all lines of business 63,000 ma
chines; this year the output will be
50 per cent, greater.
