Herr Doktor Hexamer
Prevented Rebellion,
Committee Is Informed
Washington, March 20.—The sur
prising statement that had it not j
been for the unswerving loyalty of
Herr Doktor C. J. Ilexamer, of Phil
adelphia, German sympathizers in this
country would very likely have open
ly rebelled against the Government
of the United States last April, was |
made to the Senate Judiciary Sub- i
committee yesterday in its investiga-|
tion of the German-American Al- i
liance.
This statement was made by the
Rev. Siegmund G. von Bosse, of Wil
mington, Del., who last November
succeeded Ilexamer as president of
the hyphen organization.
"The Alliance by its declaration of :
firm loyalty when hostilities were itn- j
minent served the Government in
most beneficial manner by immedi
ately putting on record the German-
Americans as supporters of the Gov- j
eminent," said Mr. von Bosse. "I i
venture to state that the outbreaks, j
which were feared by many at the
beginning of our participation in the |
war, would perhaps have material
ized if it had not been for the un
equivocal stand of Dr. Hexamer at
that time." *
That this was no casual remark
on the part of Mr. von Bosse is
shown by the fact that the proof of
his speech in defense of the Alliance
came from the printers nearly a
month ago. The proof contained the j
adjective "ardent" before the phrase ]
"supporters of the Government. |
quoted above. In giving his testi- -
mony yesterday von Bosse eliminat-j
ed this adjective. Otherwise he read ;
the statement exactly as prepared by j
him several weeks ago.
