We were escorted over toy a British and an American cruiser. When we were wltWn two days of England, the British destroyer fleet took us through the danger zone Let me tell you, dear parents, it certainly was not a nice sensation. We had two alarm drills, and then we were told that the next alarm would be the real thing, meaning that the ship would be sinking. The British destroyers then picked us up. This made us feel much better, but we slept with all our clothes on. We wore life belts all the way across. At 3 A. M. we woke up and found ourselves in Liverpool. "The trip across was certainly fine. We had cots with mattresses. We also had good food. Wo had nothing to do all day except one pa rade. > "We were in Liverpool from 3 A. M. to 3.15 P. M., when we disem barked. The shores were all crowd ed with people cheering us. There were mobs of American soldiers on the piers. We were taken in a troop train and sent here. You ought to see the English trains. The engines are so small that they look like toys, and the cars are the same, small and divided into little compart ments. But those trains can go all right. They do steadily from 40 to 50 miles per hour. "England is a most beautiful country, beautiful land, hills and the quaintest farmfe you ever saw. The fields are all green now. It is spring here now. "In the middle of the night pass ing through the coifntry we saw an air raid. You could see the air planes, and searchlights, and hear the guns popping all around us. You may have read in the papers about it. It certainly was exciting. "Wo pulled into . . (depleted by censor) .. at about 3 A. M. and had to hike 4 miles to our camp. The camp is made up of small huts, thirty men to a hut. We have cots, and eat in our huts. We have a Y. M. C. A. and Salvation Army hut. Your loving son, Immanuel." U. S. Jones of Washington, paid high tribute to the colored race before the meeting of the People's Forum held last night in Bethel A. M. E. Church. In eloquent language, he praised the work of the forutn along educational lines, and commended the colored race warmly for its service to the nation. It took 14000 years for the white race to raise from slavery to their present position, but it has only taken the colored race fifty years to come from servitude to their pres ent elevation, which is equal with that of the white race." declared Sen | ator Jones, "and where will the col ored race be 1400 years from now if they can advance at the same ratio as they have done." A regiment of engineers will be the first body of men to be brought here for training ajid it is expected that other bodies of men will be here as soon as the necessary preparations can be made. Rumors flew thick and fast for some time, most of them be ing to the effect that Gettysburg would be without soldiers this sum mer. * Most of these were given cre dence by many people. Every move of the quartermasters department was observed, and every time a truck went away from the camp with some of the things that had been stored here over the winter someone would take it as a sure in dication that gradually everything would be taken away to other camps and the camp here abandoned. The engineer regiment is expected here in a week or two and the men will be housed in the mess halls un til their tents arrive, although some are of the opinion that barracks will be built for this outfit, which will likely number between four and Ave thousand men. The outfit soon to arrive is a tank engineer regiment and when fully equipped will have sixteen of the big battle tanks which have proved so successful for thd al lies on the western front.
