WICKERSHAM & METZOER, Attorneys for Lihellant. Harrisburg, January 17, 1918. New AH-Weather Road Would Save $1,000,000 The idea advanced at Lebanon yes terday by Highway Commissioner J. Denny O'Neil that reconstruction of tho William Penn Highway between this city and Reading should consist of a two-inch bituminous top on a macadam or concrete baso means that at comparatively littlo expenso Berks, Lebanon and Dauphin counties will have fifty-two miles of an all-weather road, which will cut the living cosr. hundreds of thousands of dollars an nually. "A half-mill addition to the tax ralo in each county in 1918," said a Wil liam Penn Highway official to-day. "would provide ample money to earn for the work that can be done thin year. In Dauphin county this .would mean about. $75,000. And this sum would be more than saved each yeai* through the fact that the highway would be continuously travelable.. thus enabling the marketing of pro duce at far less cost than now pos sible. To a certain extent the winter use of the road would lessen tho dan ger for Harrisburg of another fuel famine." The commissioners of the threw counties have Commissioner O'Neli'u proposition under consideration. A committee named yesterday ti get In touch with t|ie commissioner* consists of Amos Snavely, Palmyra". W. W. Worrilaw, Lebanon; D. M. Rank, Antiville; George F. Elsen brown, Reading; Henry Jannessen, Wyomissing; John Breidenbaugb. Sinking Springs, and three Dauphin county men to be named later. The new road as now proposed would cost only a trllle more than $900,000. As originally proposed, tho cost would have been over $1,900,000. Public Service Awaits an Order Officials of the State Public Servico Commission said to-day that a state ment relative to the plan of the com j mission under the government no [ tiee tHat state rates and regulations j for pubiic service corporations, in | eluding railroads, should be in force i would be issued as soon as word camo ! from Washington.
