"Wake Up! Realize
WhanVar Means!"
Burlington, Vt., Dec. 21.—"For
God's sake wake up and realize what
this war means," ,is the message
of Congressman Porter H. Dale, to
the American people following his
return from the front in France. He
issued a statement" last night in
which he said:
"I wish I could take those easy
chr.ired Washington department fel
lows out on Vimy Ridgo—men who
after eight months of war sit back
in their offices and tell the newspa
pers that everything is all right
when the men in France have not
enough guns to equip them.
"Let me tell you that If we do not
. cut out this endless red tape, lost
motion and do away with the an
cient survivors of an ancient mili
tary system and begin furiously rush
ing guns, ammunition and supplies
and men, more men and men by the
million, we are not going to win this
war. This continual talk that every
thing is going all right must cease.
Things are going anything but right.
"The.war will not be a short one;
there is more than two years of con
flict before us, and that will mean
the sacrifice of hundreds of thou
sands of American soldiers."
