Some of these take on a value in time of war because of their pe culiar character and wide distribu tion and because they can be har vested without the labor of men. Take for example the grasses* scattered over vast areas of our country that grow sparsely and are harvested by the simp%; process of being eaten by animals. Imagine a poor family composed of mother and children, left without, male support on account of the war and living in a-suburban or country district on the wildest and most poor ly fertilized land, valueless in time of peace. Food economy for thi family Is to give It a cow or other ruminant animal that could directly consume these wild grasses and al lied vegetable matter, vast quantities i of which are widely scattered in our I country and mountains, valleys, and | plains, and rocky volcanic formations that can only be traversed by somo of the lower animals. , These animals will substitute for the labor of tnan, travel In these al j most impossible places and eat or i harvest these little bunches of grass until a day's "labor" will enable thorn | to carry to the little domeslc center a liberal quantity of milk, one of tho ' most valuable foodstuffs known to ; man for everyday uses and priceless ; in the days of sickness, when most j other foods fail. This sort of waste land is treated with such indifference in time of peace that in time of war it is not thought of, but now our people should consider the suggestion and try to take advantage of it. What has been brought out may be taken advantage of in all climates of the United States where vegeta tion grows throughout the year. It. may even be extended into colder climates where a certain amount of labor by men is necessary to prepare food in the summer to carry the cat tle through the winter. Besides the cow, which has been taken as an example, we may add geese. They will feed on the same character of food and take care of themselves until they grow into largo fowls, weighing five or six pounds apiece. Their tlesh represents a de licious and valuable food, prepared with title or no human labor in volved. To these animals can be added many others, such as ducks, goats, sheep, etc. They too, like the cow, can feed themselves on natural veg ! etatlon which is of such poor qual ] Ity that it is generally looked upon as worthless. If tills proposition were worked I out and understood, the principle could be adapted to a broad field j that would mean much to the com j fort and health of our people, as well j as add strength to the national de i fense. Pennypacker Collection of Antiques Purchased by Harrisburg Man The Pennypacker collection of curios and antiques, valued at $15,- 000 has been purchased by William E. Bailey, Front and South streets, according to a dispatch to-day from Philadelphia. The collection gathered by the late Governor is said to be an exception ally line one and was collec ted over a course of several decades. While Mr. Bailey had not yet returned to the . city, it was understood in Philadel phia that the collection will be pre served intact and possibly offered to the state for safe keeping. All manner of pottery, pewter, wood carvings, laces and other ob jects the products of Pennsylvania handicraft for many generations. Bevan A. Pennypacker, son of the late Governor, had intended to sell the collection at auction until Mr. Bailey and several others associated with him, made the purchase. American Yuletide For Pershing's Men Ry Associated Press American Training Camp In France. Nov. s.—The American sol diers in France will be treated to a genuine old-fashioned American Christmas in the Young Men's Chris tian Association or "red-triangle" huts. There will be celebrations with Christmas trees, not only at the base camps in the American training zone, hut also behind the trenches, where the American boys are lighting tyie Germans. France will supply a tree for every hut, and the Y. M. C. A., with the expected help from home, will pro vide a gift for every soldier. The movements of the troops make it im possible to guarantee that individual ly addressed presents will reach the person to whom they are sent in every case, but the "red-triangle" or ganization, as the Y. M. C. A. now is being called here. Intends that every man shall be remembered, even if the Christmas package addressed to him personally lrom home cannot be delivered. E, L.
