State Protected in
Staufter Shortage
Auditor General Snyder is array
ing for tho appointment of auditors
to represent the commonwealth and
the bondsmen of Register of Wills
Asher V. Stauffer, of Northampton,
who committed suicide yesterday ao
that the extent of his indebtedness
to the state can be ascertained. It
was declared to-day that the amount
of the money due the state might run
to $40,000, $23,000 of which was In
one estate. Stauffer was three years
behind in his payments it was said
by a representative of the Auditor
General to-day, and months ago at
tention was directed to his actions
by his failure to issue the regulation
receipts for the payment of collateral
inheritance taxes. He made monthly
payments, but it was discovered that
he had not paid what he should have
forwarded. The matter was brought
to attention of A. W. Powell, when
auditor general, who in the course of
hi# Inquiries obtained cancelled
chocks, which Auditor General Sny
der asked for when lie itook up the
matter. Mr. Powell stated that the
checks must have been removed by
error and agreed to get them. Mr.
Snyder asked for them again to-day.
State fiscal officers said to-day that
they thought the state was amply
protected and that as Soon as tho
Governor appoints a register for
Northampton payments of taxes due
can be made. Offers were made to
day to pay taxes to the state, but
were refused pending an appoint
ment. The register's office at Easton
is closed.
