RETAILERS KEEP FOOD PRICES UP, CHARGES HOOVER 350,000 Dealers Blamed For Holding High Levels, De spite Regulations \ Hoover Turns Light on These Food Facts The average price of tiour a barrel, $13.77, is from $1.50 to $2 greater than is warranted by the wholesale price. The retailer is reaping the excess. The price of beef wholesale has fallen one and one-half cents a pound since July, but the retail 1 price has increased four cents in , that period. The recent advance in sugar ! prices by retailers to nine cents j and more per pound is absolutely | unwarranted. ' Bean growers' associations in | bean-producing states are holding i their product for from thirteen and one-half to fifteen cents per pound, against an average, price | last year of eight cents, and des- i pite the fact that this year's yield j is 7,000,000 bushels in excess of j last year. In the fact of a 59 per cent, in- j crease in the potato harvest, growers are holding their pro- I duct for higher prices. *■ 1 Washington, Oct. 19. Herbert Hoover declares that the public is paying too much for many of Use necessities of life, and he placed the responsibility squarely up to the re tail food distributor. Quoting figures to prove that while wholesale prices have been reduced the retail figures have remained stationary or have advanced, lie asserted that 350,000 retailers, grocers and the like, have balked the government effort to Sjbablllke the cost of living and indi cated that thty are beyond the con trol of the food administration. Asked if he would go before Con ffreM in December lor power to regu late retailers, he replied that the c onduct of the retailers in the mean lime would decide what he would do in December. The facts he made public to-day indicate strongly that government regulation of all hand lers of foodstuffs down to the small est grocer, is possible. The only re tailers who will come within the scope of President Wilson's recent licensing proclamation are those do ing a business of SIOO,OOO a year or more. Mr. Hoover said to-day that they number only 1,200 while the to tal number of retailers approximated 350,000. Hoover Outlines Plans 1-acking power to compel the re tailer to do business on the basis of cost and a fair profit. Mr. Hoover de clared that he intends to do the fol lowing things in an effort to wipe out excessive profits: "Inaugurate a system by which the wholesale prices of principal staples shall he published in every consum ing center every day, so that the pub lic may know what the retailers are paying for their stocks. "Gather reports on retail prices from 700 cities, average them and make public at regular intervals. "Let the public decide whether the retailer is playing fair or whether it is necessary to regulate him by law." State Odd Fellows Install New Officers By Associated Press Bradford, Pa..
