Writes Verses For Old
Boatmen at Big Reunion
Sunburv, Pa.. Sept. B.—The follow
ing verses by Margaret Wertz Clark
of 421 Forster street. Harrisburg
were read at the Old Boatmen's Re
union held here recently and by unan
imous vote are sent to the Telegraph
for publication, which paper is read
by a majority of those who attended
the reunion, the poem being dedicated'
to the late Captain William WerSz,
of Newport:
Once again we meet and welcome
Old-time friends at Rolling Green.
Glad and happy at this meeting,
All too short the day will seem.
As we meet with this and that one
Memories seem to crowd the day.
And recall the time of boating,
When we sure had "right of way
Along the winding Susquehanna
I Slow but sure our boats did glide;
Down the valley, 'long the mountains
I Known for their beauty far and
wide.
' How our hearts rebound with pleasure
As we view the sam old "route":
! Brings to memory friends and boats
I And the driver's call or shout.
"Boat ahead!" And if we hurry
Along this level we ran pass.
Make the lock and gain a-headw'av;
Steering straight, we won at last.
Thus we lived oft night and dav
In the times now past and gone
Asl we•braved rain, storm or sunshine,
Nipjnt s dark shadows, we lonped for
morn.
Eut listen! Let us stop and think;
Before this glad day brings a close
Many, many of our friends
May be drifting, drifting,—no one
knows.
What a grand and useful lesson
Each and all of us ran bring
To our homes, our friends and loved
ones.
Grand! If we all can Join and sing
"Throw out the lifeline, across the
dark wave:
There is a brother whom some one
can save.
Somebodv's brother—Oh. who then
will dare
To throw out the lifeline, his peril to
share?"
Every look, kind word or action
As our boat glides down life's
stream.
Sure will tell when all is ended
Let it not "be all a dream "
On the distant shores our eantaln
Beckons us with loving hand
Let us steer our boat, life's vovage
and in safety we will land '
For the bugle soon mav sound
Far across the rolling deep
Calling each one into port
Peaceful be our dreamless sleep
There our loved ones now are waiting
Watching from tlmt shining shore'
Listening for the voice of dear ones
And the sound of our fair boat's
"oar.
Here this day we meet In gladness
Near the Susquehanna's shore
"Some day" as we steer our "life
boat ,
Meet in Heaven, to part no more.
