STEVENS GUARDS
TO VISIT CHURCH
Military Rody of Stevens M. E.
Congregation to Go
in Rody ,
The Stevens Memorial Guards and
their many friends held a picnic yes
terday at Paxiang Park. It was a
great success in every way. Quite
early in the day the boys assembled
at the church, Thirteenth and Ver
non streets, and were taken in a spe
cial car to the park. Exhibition
drills were given by them in the
morning and afternoon before large
crowds. The park managers in many
ways gave the boys a good time.
To-morrow evening at 7.30 o'clock
they will attend the Happy Hour
service to be held in the church. At
6.45 the ranks will form and later
the boys will march in a body into
the auditorium. The address of the
evening will be full of good things
for the guards and their parents.
Colonel Henry C. Demming is to be
the speaker. The following commit
tee will be in charge of the seating:

The guards and their fathers are
to be entertained by the J. Harris
Bell Sunday school class Tuesday

Evening Services
To-morrow evening the first of a
■eries of three joint services which
will be held by the congregations of
the St. John's Reformed, the St. Mat
thew's Lutheran and the Camp Cur
tin Memorial Methodist Churches
will be held in the St. John's Church.
The Rev. Paul M. Spangler will
preach at the morning service at the
church, while the Rev. E. E. Snyder,
pastor of the St; Matthew's Luther
an, will preach at the evening serv
ice, while the devotional exercises
will be led by the Rev. A. S. Wil
liams, of the Camp Curtin Church,
and the Rev. G. W. Hartman, pas
tor of St. John's. Special musical
numbers will be furnished by George
W. Giede and Clarence E. Zorger.
Next Sunday evening the services
will be held In the Methodist, at
which time the Rev. Mr. Hartman
will preach. The service on the fol
lowing Sunday evening will be held
In the St. Matthew's Church.
If the plan is favorable they will
be continued during the summer and
also be started early next summer.

Will Leave With Eighth
Regiment

REV. H. N. BASSLER
The Rev. Harry Nelson Bassler,
pastor of the Second Reformed
Church and chaplain of the Eighth
Regiment, with the commission of
captain, will preach his last sermons
at his church to-morrow. His ser
mon themes will be a review of the
past since he took charge of the local
church, fourteen years ago. At 9
o'clock he will conduct services on
the island for the soldiers. Music
will be furnished by the regimental
band. Last summer the Rev. Mr.
Bassler accompanied the troops to
the Mexican border. During his
eight months' absence from the city
the pulpit was filled by a professor
from Franklin and Marshall College,
Lancaster. If he goeb to France nis
plans are not known.
The Rev. Mr. Bassler graduated
from Franklin and Marshall College
in 1891 and from the seminary in
1894. Immediately after his gradua
tion he assumed his duties at Cham
bersburg. He came to this city from
Chambersburg in 1903. Two years
after he came to Harrisburg' the
present building was begun, which
was dedicated in 1906, at a cost of
$50,000, which was paid for in four
years. The present membership of
the church is 754, an increase of
566 since he assumed the local
charge.

At the Epworth League service to
morrow evening, the eleven dele
gates from Stevens Memorial Meth
odist Church, to the seventh annual
Epworth League Institute held at
Eaglesmere, July 9 to 16, will tell
in detail the outstanding features of
this summer training camp for Ep
worth Leaguers. This chapter was
awarded an institute pennant for
having had the greatest amount of
mileage to its credit of any single
chapter represented. This pennant
has been placed in the league room.
The meeting to-morrow evening
will be in charge of the president,
Koss K. Bergstresser, who is also a
director of the institute for the Har
risburg district. Brief reports on the
class work of the week will be givfcn
by the following delegates: Junior
league methods, Miss Miriam Brown;
home missions and social oervice.

Interesting Sermon Themes
For Services at Market
Square Church
"Behold He Cometh" will be the
subject of the sermon on the Sec
ond Advent, to be preached by the
Rev. George Edward llawes, D. D.,
at the Market Square Presbyterian
Church to-morrow evening. This will
be the next to the last ol' the present
series on "The Things That Must
Come to Pass." The last sermon
will be preached by Dr. Hawes next
Sunday, just before he leaves for his
annual vacation.
The morning sermon will be on
"The Gospel for Wartimes." It will
be a very helpful presentation of
"the truth as it is fri Jesus," with
special reference to the declaration
of the love of God In such times of
turmoil and conflict as now engulf
the world and with it many individ
ual lives.
The Christian Endeavor Society
will have charge of the 6 o'clock
vesper service at the City Hospital
during the absence of the Rev. Mr.
Robinson, who has been for some
months conducting theSe services.
The Rev. Mr. Robinson 1s with the
, boys of the Fresh Air Camp under
the auspices bf the Associated Aid
Societies, located near Manada Gap.

The Daily Vacation Bible School
has progressed very finely during
the week. The story hour and tho
memory work Is being developed
with much success by the teachers.
One of the special memory selections
that has aroysed great interest
among the scholars has been the
committing of the Wilbur Nesblt's
