Colonel Outlines What He
Believes This Country
Should Get
New York, May 11. Theodore
Roosevelt in an article headed
"Put the Flag on the Firing Line"
in the June Metropolitan Magazine,
outlines what our peace terms should
be. In part he says:
"The Prussianized Germany of the
Kohenzollerns has shown itself even
more the enemy of freedom and
luimanity and justice and interna
fftnal right than was Napoleon's
France. Let us strive for the peace
of justice and of international right.
Did they but know it, the German
people themselves wouid benefit by
our victory; and especially the peo
ple of South Germany and of Austria,
who would be free from the tyranny
of Prussia, and would be guaranteed
in all their rights—surely more than
an offset for not being allowed to
wrong others. Belgium and France
must have all that has been taken
from them restored. 'The Turk must
leave Europe—a Democratic; Russia
at Constantinople will threaten no
one. Armenia should be freed and
autonomous. Austria i* not a coun
try but a knot of nationalities, of
which two tyrannize over the others.
Let the Hungarians keep Magyar
Hungary, and the Austrians German
Austria. Let the Italians have the]
Trentino and Trieste. Let there be a |
great Servia, a great Bohemia, a i
great Roumania. Poland should once
more '&• a nation, which should in
clude all the Polish lands, and have
an outlet on the Baltic through old
Polish Prussia, old West Prussia.
East Prussia, which is German,
would be ur avoidably separated from
the other German lands; but it could |
be kept united with them politically;
and also commercially by- arrange
ment:! for through railway traffic
such #s we have with Canada as re
earvs our international railroads.

In his magazine article the colonel
describes his proposed expeditionary
torce to France and points out the
important duties of the "private
citizen" with America at war.
STATE COLLEGE WILL ADMIT
HIGH SCHOOL FARM WORKERS
State College, May 11. Follow
ing the action of the State Board
of Education urging public school
officials to excuse their pupils for
farm work, the Pennsylvania State
College has announced that high
school students with proper credit
will be admitted to the college next
fall. It is expected that high school
principals will certify to the stand
ing of the students who leave the
class rooms to go into the fields.
The State board lias said it is con
vinced of the imperative needs of
husbanding all the resources of the
Commonwealth, and it requests the
school authorities and the great
army of pupils, who have talent or
capacity for service of any type, the
patriotic duty of their contribution
in this hour of national need. The
board's announcement refers to the
great scarcity of farm labor, pointing
oulrfhat the school code provides that
<lir"tors may excuse the absence of
pupils for urgent reasons.
According to the board's ruling, all
pupils above the age of twelve years
may be released from their studies
to engage in farming, trucking, gar
dening and their allied industries. A
careful survey is planned of tlie in
dustrial and agricultural schools of
the State for the purpose of ascer
taining in what way they may con
tribute help.
COAST GUARD STATIONS TO
USE AEROULANES
Aeroplanes will be added to the
equipment of the United States
Coast Guard stations to "aid in res
cue work if recent proposals are
adopted," says the Popular Mechan
ics Magazine. "Many a vessel has
been wrecked on the rocks at a point
too far from shore to be reached by
the line-throwing gun, and while the
sea was running so high that the im
periled crew and passengers could
not be rescued with lifeboats. In
such a case a flying boat would be
called on to carry a life line out to
the distressed vessel. Another task
which the air craft may be em
ployed in is localingf derelicts so
that they csn be removed as quickly
as possible from navigation routes."
ADAPTABLE PEDESTAL
The nation-wide discussion of
measures for Increasing our defenses
on sea gives added interest to a ma
chine-gun pedestal for the navy,
inbanufactured by a Buffalo concern.
This mounting is designed to be fas
tened to the dec.k of a coat cutter, or
harbor-patrol boat, etc. It consists
of abase with gun mounting, and is
so constructed that a complete cir
cle can be described in the opera
tion of the gun regardless of the
angle at which it is placed. The tir
ing piece can be elevated to prac
tically 90 degrees or pointed lower

ATTENDED RECEPTION
New Cumberland, Pa., May 11.
Mrs. L. M. Walker and daughter
Lorene of New Cumberland, attend
ed the wedding reception of Mr. and
Mrs. Brady Ashburn, which was held
at their newly-furnished home at
2004 Derry street, Harrisburg, on
Wednesday night. Mrs. Ashburn is
a sister of Mrs. Walker and was Miss
Irene Senseman, of Mechanicsburg,
before her marriage.
FIGHTING IN BRITISH ARMY
Marietta, May 11. Professor and
Sirs. J. G. Bowman, of Lancaster,
have received a letter from their son,
Boone, who is lighting with the Brit
ish in 'Northwestern France. It was
dated April 1. and bore the field post
mark of April 6. In it the son states
that he has received a letter from
home, which was mailed February
11, via London, bearing an official
statement that the letter had been
rescued from a steamship whic
was sunk by a torpedoboat and had
been soaked with salt water. The
s<4K is in the Lahore division of the
artillery corps, having gone to Eng
land in the summer of 1914.

on tree which is bearing fruit. Yes
terday he plucked two lemons that
weighed nearl ytwo pounds each.
FARMER LOSES FOUR HORSES
