STOCKS GAIN AFTER
A CAUTIOUS OPENING
Market Gains Momentum Under Lead of U. S. Steel and
Active Equipments and Rails; Bethlehem
Makes Overnight Jump
NEW I'ORK. May 8. (Wall Street)
—Opening; cautiously but mainly at
high levels, to-day's market soon
gathered momentum under lead of
United States Steel and active equip
ments and rails. Steel was again
freely taken in large individual lots
up to 116*8, an over-night gain of a
point with almost two points for
Bethlehem Steel new stock. Cana
dian Pacific was the outstanding fea
ture of the railway section, gaining
two points, Delaware and Hudson
sharing to the same extent. Ship
pings, motors and a few other prom
inent specialties averaged one point
advances and Texas Company rose
more than three points.
The bullish outburst of the first !
half hour was speedily dissipated, ,
operations falling away to exceeding- j
ly slender proportions for the bal- I
ance of the forenoon. With the ex
ception of United States tSeel which
surrendered about half the gain re- j
cessions were the rule, Canadian Pa- i
citic losing almost all its advantage j
and other important rails falling un- ;
der yesterday's llnal quotations. It |
required little pressure to effect a
reaction in this group, industrials
and specialties offering more resist- j
ance, Hon dealings were restricted, j
reflecting the further indifference of j
investors.
