BRITAIN LOOKS
FOR U. S. ARMY
Fighting Men Think America
Will Want to Be on
French Front
By Associated Press
British Headquarters in France, via
London. April s.—There is much
speculation in the British army as to
what assistance, in a military sense,
America might render the allies. Ue-
Kardless of what theorists may sav.
practical fighting men here believe
that the United States would want to
have representation with the allied :
army on this front and would send j
over a considerable fighting force'
THURSDAY EVENING,
! within six months, providing the war
; lasts that long.
On basis tor this belief is that both
( Germany and Great Britain are fight
ing with new armies, Britain because
she did not have an army in the Eu
ropean sense before the war began
and Germany because her forces are
, largely made up of classes called to
the colors since 1914, a large propor
tion having only five months' training.
It is generally figured now that a good
soldier can be made within six months.
The organization behind the fighting
force must be built up by genius, but
it is thought here that America can
j easily meet that emergency.
It is also argued in army circles
that America might well specialize in
: such branches as aviation and ma
: chine gun detachments. The airplanes
j would have, however, to come up to
a high standard and must make at
I least 150 miles an hour to take rank
: with the best English and French
machines. One definite thing expect
ed is that America will undoubtedly
j increase manifold the hospital and
medical assistance which she Is al
-1 ready voluntarily rendering the allies.

Rejuvenated Orchards Pay
Increased Apple Profits
One of the biggest problems In
Pennsylvania horticulture to-day is
the rejuvenation of the farm orchards
of one to five acres each. Over eighty
per cent, of the 8,000,000 barrels of ap
ples produced In Pennsylvania in 1917
came from these orchards, according
to Dr. S. W. Fletcher, professor of
horticulture at the Pennsylvania State
College, who gives specific direction
for their rejuvenation.
Prune out in March or April, all
diseased wood, suckers, water sprouts
and crossing limbs, to open the top to
sunlight. Tall limbs, if not over four
inches in diameter, may need cutting
back to bring the bearing surface
nearer the ground. No stubs should
be left, and large wounds should be
painted. Orchards planted less than
twenty-five feet apart may frequently
be thinned to advantage.
Apply a liberal dressing of manure.
If manure is not available, use ten to
twenty pounds oer tree of a mixture

of one part nitrate of soda and three
parts acid prosphate, immediately be
fore the blossoming season. It may
be best to disk or plow the orchard in
April, and cultivate it frequently un
til July. Crimson clover or vetch may
then be sown. Pastured orchards,
however, frequently do well if liber
ally fertilized or manured.
Spray the trees with lime-sulphur
solution, diluted one to eight, just
before the winter buds burst. Imme
diately after petals fall and again nine
weeks later, apply lime-sulphur, one
to forty, adding two pounds of lead
arsenate paste to each fifty gallons of
spray. A barrel spray pump outfit
sufficient for a small orchard costs
from $lO to S2O.
NEW ARABIC FORECAST
London, April s.—lt is generally
believed in Kngland that the close of
the war will see the reorganization of
Arabia into a definite autonomous
government, known as Arabistan with
the capital in Mecca, and governing
a territory about the size of India.
Big Belligerents Borrow
From Holland Despite
Protest of the Dutch
The Hague, Natlierlands, April 5.
Despite her efforts to prevent it, Hol
land is becoming, perforce, a large
lender to the belligerent states. Great
Britain set the example of paying for
its .arge supplies of dairy and other
produce in exchequer bills, and, when
Germany demanded the same privi
lege, neutral Holland could not see
its way to refuse, however differently
it might regard Berlin paper. Holland
has been trying to apply the brake on
this downward road that might land
it in uncomfortable circumstances but
so far, apparently unsuccessfully.
While these nations demand virtual
ly everything on credit, they require
little Holland to pay for her import
ed goods in cash. Jn one respect this
operates to Holland's advantage owing
to the fact that the rates of exchange
APRIL 5, 191
in Germany and Austria arc depress
ed and Holland purchasers, conse
quently, pay less now than they would
after the war when the exchange
rates may have risen.
ENGLAND SAVES *10,000,000
London, April 5. Although the
conversion of older securities into the
new war loan yielding a higher rate
of interest cost the country just over
7,000,000 pounds sterling it is estimat
ed that a saving of over 2,000,000
pounds In annual charges has been ef
fected by not issuing the loan on a
six per cent, basis.
SECOND CABLE BREAKS
Copenhagen, April 6.—The break
ing of the second cable connecting Co
penhagen with Great Britain Is con
firmed here. Only two cables now re
main, one of which is devoted entirely
to Anglo-Russian business. The news
papers here are urging the resumption
of the wireless servico which existed
at the beginning of the war.

N. Y. Senate Expresses
Confidence in Wagner
and Mayor Mitchel
By Associated Press
Albany, N. Y., April s.—Adoption by
the Senate of resolutions expressing
confidence in the loyalty and patriot
ism of Democratic deader Robert F.
Wagner, of the Senate and containing
no word of censure for Mayor John
P. Mitchel, of New York, brought
the Mltchel-Wagner controversy over
Rockaway fort site legislation to a
sudden termination early to-day. The
endorsement of Senator Wagner was
unanimous. The resolution ending
the Inquiry was adopted by a vote of
30 to 13 in which party lines were not
adhered to.
It was the f>neral sentiment, as re
flected by speeches in open Senate
during the final scene of the proceed
ings, that with a declaratisns of war
expected hourly, the Senate had more
Important business to occupy its at
tention than those then at Utnr
