The market broadened considerably before the end of the first hour embracing many in active specialties and rails. Motors were among the strongest issues at gains of 2 to 8 points, Equipments, Munitions and Oils increased initial quotations and shippings and Sugars also augmented early advances. Steel was taken in moderately large lots up to 113%, or an extreme gain of 1%, and semiwar shares like Indus trial Alcohol and American Can rose from 1 % to almost 4 points. Heading, Norfolk and Western, Lehigh Valley and Canadian Pacific were among the strong and active rails. Bonds were firm.
