Executrix of the Estate of Ben. Eby, JOHN ENSMINGER, Auctioneer. J, H. RIFE, Attorney. JANUARY 1, 1917. , ! GIRL'S SLAYER WORE SILK SHIRT [Continued From First Page] that they had neither heard nor seen i anything unusual on the night the tra- < gedy is believed to have occurred. Silk Shirt Clue According to Captain Tate, of the , detective bureau, Mrs. Roberts, who , was about 23 years old, was a widow. , Sheis said by relatives, Tate declares, to have had several male friends who , called upon her at her apartments. A ( dozen or more photographs of men were found In the room, but whether any of them have been identified the police decline to say. A man's • shirt and collar, both bloodstained, ] were found in a closet in the room. The owner of these;' tho authorities believe, to be tho murderer. The young woman was last seen alive by acquaintances at the apart ment house last Thursday. Bessie Colbert, a sister, who lives in West Philadelphia, went to call on her Sat urday night and when she received no response to her summons she called , tho Janitor. The janitor climbed in a window and found the girl dead. Miss Colbert advanced the theory of rob bery as the motive for the crime, but in this police disagree. Valuable jew elry and a small sum of money, the detectives say, were found in her : room. Moid Disappears A maid of Mrs. Roberts, who disap peared shortly after the murder, was discovered, is being sought by the po lice. They hope that she may be able to throw some light upon the mys tery. The police are confident the mur derer was one of the girl's admirers, and that some issue of a deeply senti mental character was under discussion between the pair before the crime was committed. While the murder was of a brutal character, this was probably due to the fact that it was unpremeditated. It was apparent that there had been a dispute, culminating in a hand-to hand battle, during which the mur derer struck Mrs. Roberts several times with an electric iron. With this weapon the woman's nose was broken and her skull fractured. Then the murderer took a silk stocking and strangled her. Show Her u Suicide After the woman was dead, the murderer had taken a rubber hose, at tached this to a gas jet,and placed this In such a way that one at first might have believed that Mrs, Roberts had committed suicide by gas. But after all this trouble the murderer forgot to turn on the gas, and also made no at tempt to right things in the apart ment and cover up the evidences of a struggle. The girl when found was clad in lilac silk pajamas, and had been dead for at least twenty-four hours. According to Captain of Detectives Tate robbery was not a motive for the murder. Judging from the manner in which the girl was first brutally beat en, then strangled, and later laid upon the bed, it is thought the tragedy is one that involves the happiness of more persons than the two directly concerned. Wlto Owns the Shirt The utmost Importance is attached by the police to a silk shirt, with blue stripes, neck size, 15, and a 15% col lar ,found in a closet. The owner of the shirt and collar is believed to have been the murderer. Both, blood stained and rumpled, were found where they had been apparently tossed in great haste. The murderer evi dently removed his collar and shirt before washing his hands at the bath room washstand, as there are bloody finger prints about the buttonhole in the front of the collar, and bloody prints about the washstand. If this be the case, he must have hurried from the apartment without shirt or collar, but with his coat collar turned up. Well Known As Model Until October the girl was a mani , cure in the Keith building. She had occupied the apartments a year. They consist of three rooms and a bath, renting for about *SO a month. She posed for advertising agencies, ap pearing in street car and magazine . advertisements dressed in a certain well-known brand of petticoat, in hos iery ads, and also appeared upon the screen in motion picture fashion pic tures. She possessed handsome clothes, and drove. It Is said, a motor car. Not long ago she ran tho auto mobile Into a shop window, but es caped injury in the accident. Among her visitors, it is said, was a flne-looklng man about 28 years old, who drove a large touring car ,and called dally. Another of her admirers Is said to have been a man of about 50 years old, with whom she was fre quently seen. Hear No Screams A peculiar feature of the case is the declaration of everybody in the apart ment house, and the janitor, that they did not hear the noise of the struggle, altough it must liavo been loud and prolonged. All declare no screams were heard. All this time the pair must have fought and reeled about the apart ment, for chairs and furniture were upset and smashed, rugs trampled and shoved into heaps, bric-a-brac and pictures brushed from walls and sideboard—the fight occurred In the dining room—and then trample under foot. Hlood Marks on Telcphouc Blood marks on the telephone show that, the girl fought her way to the 'phone to call for help, only to bo dragged away again. Blood stains upon the curtains and two windows show she twice made her way to the windows to call for aid, to be pulled away, and .beaten. Apparently, the girl's strength and vitality defying all his efforts to silence her, the murderer seized a silk stock ing, and strangled her with it. Then he picked her up and laid her upon • the bed, covering her with a sheet. She was dressed in lilac silk pajamas. ■I- . -> —j MARKET ST.
