Eggnog For Christmas
Despite High Prices
High price of eggs and milk will |
not Interfere with the old-fashioned
Christmas drink—eggnogg. When the :
price of eggs went soaring, and reach
ed 50 cents a dozen, some folks re-1
marked: "Xo eggnogg for Christmas j
this year, fhere is no cause for many j
according to one hotel man. Asked i
about the Christmas observance, he 1
said:
"It would not be Christmas without j
eggnogg. While it is true that 15 j
cents is the price paid for egg drinks
at soda fountains, and at most bars in i
Harrisburg, 20 and 23 cents, the usual
price of 10 cents will be charged for l
a glass of eggnogg. You see a whole |
egg is not used for every drink. When j
you figure out tne cost of a bowl of j
eggnogg this year with eggs at 50 |
cents a dozen, it shows a decreased i
profit, but not a serious one.
s BLUEJACKETS TO VISIT
PANAMA CANAL NEXT YEAR
The bluejackets of the Atlantic fleet j
will liave an opportunity next Spring l
to visit the Panama canal, and see the j
wonderful eneineering undertaking.
According to the schedule of the At- ;
lantic fleet announced at the Navy j
Department, the battleship force, the '
cruiser force, the active destroyers!
and the mine and train force are due j
to make a five-day visit to the canal I
during the period of fleet exercises be- i
tween March 17 and 26. Thousands)
of young men making their llrst cruise j
will therefore be afforded the rare I
chance of viewing for themselves the
construction and operations of the
canal.
While no formal arrangements have
been made It Is expected that a j
program will be prepared by the canal
authorities working In conjunction
with Admiral Mayo of the Atlantic
fleet whereby all men wll bo given
facilities for making n sight-seeing
trip across the Isthmus. This was
done four years ago when the big fleet
made a sight-seeing trip to the Isth
mus.
The construction of the canal across
the Isthmus of Panama takes rank as
one of the greatest feats of human
skill; for over four hundred years it
has been Hie dream of adventurous
people of Europe and America, In
deed. since the day of tlie first white
explorers in the new world this pro
ject has been considered an ultimate
necessity. The difficulties in the way,
however, were found too great until
the project waa taken hold of in dead
earnest by the American government
in 1904, when the United States ac
quired possession of a 10-mlle strip
running across the Isthmus known as
the Canal Zone. Thousands of lives and
millions of treasure were sacrificed in
the attempt to force a passage through
the backbone of the American contin
ent.
The cost to the United States from
the time it acquired possession to the
day of completion, including $50,000,-
000 paid to the New French Canal
Company and to the Republic of Pan
ama for property and franchises, ap
proximated $375,000,000, For further
information regarding this trip call at
the Navy Recruiting office in the
Bergner building.
THE GREAT OBSTACLE
The pastor of a country church
writes to us that "the great obstacle"
to the success of his work lies in the
fact that so many peopie are "indiffer
ent to church activities." The brother
has put a sure finger on a very corn
common human failing. Indifference
has always been the great obstacle to
progress in every line of life. The
enthusiasts are the salt of life, the
leaven that keeps the world from
growing stale. The indifferent man is
not only a poor church
man; he is a poo* merchant, a poor
etudent, a poor farmer, a poor citizen,
> a poor lover. We might all pray to
the Lord to deliver us from the evil
of indifference. We might well do our
part by cultivating our enthusiasms
and giving them a practical turn. For-
WEDNESDAY EVENING,
j tunately for ourselves and for the
| world, we all have matters in which
, we take a natural interest, approach
! ing the point of enthusiasm. These
I are the matters we should cultivate.
: They offer us success along the line
1 i of least resistance. —Farm Life.
