Operating expenses for Oc tober increased $3,413,890, so that net I earnings fell off $293,960. In Sep tember the loss in net was $434,785. Operations Loom Big Figures of the operations for the ten months of the year still loom big. Oross revenues aggregate $368,464,- 227, an increase of $65,543,471, and net earnings are $94,927,451, a gain of $24,113,704, or more than thirty three per cent. The Pennsylvania Railroad proper . for October shows a sain of $1,213,390 in gross, bilt a loss of $363,824 .in net. Operating costs for tho month In t creased $1,452,413. Maintenance of i equipment took $536,648 more than for the same month last year and transportation costs increased $564,- 1 4 56. If distribution of the order Is made along the same lines as fol lowed in recent years, the United States Steel Cocporatlon will get about 90,000 tons: Bethlehem Steel, includ ing Pennsylvania Steel, 58,000 tons; Midvale Steel 4 5,000 tons and Lacka wanna Steel 12,000 tons. J., Dec. 1. ln some unexplained manner Johnson Shaffer, engineer of a milk train on the Lehigh Valley Railroad, was killed i yesterday and the train sped on. For eight miles It ran at 60 miles an hour, with no hand at the throttle. Then the fireman, finding that something was wrong, went into the cab and dis covered that Shaffer was missing. He stopped the train a few miles east of thhs city and otfaer employes of the road began an investigation. The body of the engineer was found be side the tracks eight miles back, near Flagtown.
