CHRISTMAS TREE AT NEWPORT
Newport, Pa., Nov. 24. Newport's
third annual municipal Christmas
tree has been assured. The employes
the Newport and Sherman's Valley
Railroad will co-operate as It has done
in the past two years. The public Is
being asked to contribute for neces
sary expenses. The Newport Choral
Society will sing on Christmas Eve.
Recent Deaths in
Central Pennsylvania
Marietta. Mrs. Peter Miller of
Fritztown, aged 54, died yesterday.
She is survived by her husband, ten
children and a number of grandchil
dren.
Marietta. Mrs. Jerome Hershock,
aged 41, of Reamstown, died from the
effects of a stroke; Her husband and
several children survive.
Altoona. Martin L. Bechtel, for
mer sheriff of Blair county, died yes
terday at his home at Martlnsburg,
aged 80. He was a Civil War veteran,
having lost his right arm in the battle
of Gettysburg.
Reading. Henry Farnum, aged
77, a Mason for fifty years, died here
yesterday.
CHRISTMAS KEEPS KIDDIES BUSY
One wise mother thought of a way
to keep the children quiet and it is
told about in the December Woman's
Home Companion. The writer says:
"One year it chanced that the chil
dren were all suffering with severe
colds and must be kept indoors for a
few days before Christmas. The
mother was at her wits' end to keep
them entertained and quiet, when lit
tle Annie, after a whispered confer
ence with her brothers, came to her
mother and asked timidly: "Couldn't
we make something for the Christ
mas tree?' 'Why not?' thought the
harassed mother, ready to grasp at
any rellof. Accordingly sho brought
out a store of colored parper, supplied
paste, scissors and sewing materials,
and arranged a table on which the
children could work. They made gilt
and silver stars, cornucopias and tiny
baskets from flowered wall paper, anil
tarlatan bags to he filled with candies.
Popcorn was popped and strung in
chains. Cotton was made into snow
balls and snowflakes. The children
were kept happy and busy, and their
physical conditions Improved each
day."
MAN FALLS 30 FEET
Lewistown, Pa., Nov. 24. George
Yetter, of near Maitland, while help
ing to thresh on the, farm of John
Miller, fell a distance of 30 feet and
suffered serious Injuries. No bones
were broker., but the man is suffering
with internal Injuries.
MISS TARMAN BURIED
Shlppensbu'rg, Pa., Nov. 24. Yes
terday the body of Miss Minnie Tar
man of Carlisle, was brought here for
burial.

Halifax, Pa., Nov. 24. The
churches of Halifax met together In a
mass meeting on Wednesday evening
In the Methodist Episcopal church,
where Albert H. White, the Harris
burg manager of the American Cfvic
Reform Union, delivered his lecture
on "Whose Boy Is He?" His address
was filled with personal experiences
gained in social survey work.

Halifax, Pa., Nov. 24. Mrs. Lizzie
McClellan, of Halifax, says that sev
eral years ago she was a domestic at
the home of Woodrow Wilson, now
President of the United States, but at
that time at Princeton University. She
is very much elated over the Presi
dent's re-election.
