CHINESE NEWSPAPERS AND
SCHOOLS
Estimates regarding literacy vary
from five per cent, of the entire popu
lation to seventy per cent, of the male
population, but more and more are
coming to read, as transportation
methods and communication by tele
graph and post office are being im
proved. A newspaper now costs as
much as a meal in many parts of
China, and this is not conducive to
literacy nor unity of sentiment; but.
a single paper serves a much larger
group of readers than with ourselves.
Literacy is the most necessary step
toward national unity, and education
la the most needed reform. Even
those students who do not appreciate
the efforts of evangelistic missions tes
tify sincerely to the great value of
American educational missionary
work. Not only are American mission
schools prominent In the present edu
cational system in China, but more
such schools are urged by the Chinese.
