| Lexington Green in Eastern Massachusetts, where British regulars first fired on American colonists, attracts hun- j
dreds of automobilists each day during the summer. Here on the 19th of April, 1773, a regiment of eight hundred
British regulars dispatched from Boston by General Gage to sieze stores of ammunition supposed to have been hidden
in Concord by the colonists, were met by seventy provincials. Palling to disperse on command, the patriots were fired
on by the British and sixteen of them were killed. This, the "Eattle" of Lexington, tired the country and within a
short time an army of sixteen thousand men had gathered about Boston, the first organized defiance uf British rule In
I America.
• Fine State reads lead to Lexington from every direction and every rood has Its historic points and scenes. Many
|of the original houe'-s about Lexington Green are still standing and are still fine residences. The white house seen in the
j picture is the Harrington homestead at the doorway of which John Harrington who was fatally wounded when Plt
! cairn commanded the British to fire on the assembled "rebels," expired at the feet of his wife

HOME RULE FOR
IRELAND IS SEEN
Despite Revolt Great Leader
Asserts It Is Safe if Ireland
Remains Sane
Waterford, Ireland, Oct. 6.—ln a:
notable address to his constituents | •
j here this afternoon John Redmond, |.
| the Irish Nationalist leader in parlla- !
; inent, declared thai despite the recen. j
rebellion, "with all its inevitable after-
I math of brutalities, stupidities and in
; famed passions," home rule for Ire
land is safe if Ireland remains sane.
Mr. Redmond also declared that
conscription could never bo forced !
upon Ireland, adding:
"I cannot bring myself to believe
that, malign though the influences at
work are, the government will be In
sane enough to challenge a conflict
with Ireland on this subject. Con
scription for Ireland, far from helping
the army and the war, would be the
moßt fatal thing that could happen. It
i would be resisted in every village in j
i Ireland. Its attempted enforcement
would be a scandal which would ring ;
round the world. It would produce no
additional men."
Continuing, the Irish parliamentary
j leader said;
' The mere threat is paralyzing re- I
i crulting, which, mark you, is not dead, |
!as some people say. The latest figures, 1
indeed, show that from the date of the
rising (Easter Sunday) until Septem
ber 6,000 recruits were received.
"This demand for conscription is not
a genuine military demand. It is a
base political device put forward by j
men who want to injure and discredit |
| Ireland's political future."
