POLITICAL DRIFT TOWARD HUGHES One Poll Shows 8 Out of 10 Democratic Businessmen Turn From Wilson Washington.—Drifts politically show ' decisive gains for Hughes, with no sur face trends favorable to the re-election President Wilson. These favorable for the election of Hughes are seen in the heavy Republican vote in New Jersey, the complete anial- ! gamation of the Republicans and Pro- j gressives there, the successes of the! Republicans In the September elec- ] tion in Maine and the unprecedented i Republican registrations reported in j many states. In Republican circles It is realized, however, that in the Middle Western States and in some of the Coast States the argument that "Wilson has kept the country out of war" has tended to strengthen the Democratic party. In Oregon and Washington, which are normally Republican, the Democrats are admittedly strong by reason of the support being given them on the peace program. On the other hand. Califor nia, New Mexico and Arizona aro con sidered certain to be found in the Re publican column by reason of the ad ministration's Mexican policy. One of the most significant signs in dicative of Republican victory Is seen In the many polls being taken through out the country. Nearly all of these polls, outside of labor districts, show that Wilson is being deserted by men who .voted for him four years ago. The proportion of changes Is three to two in favor of Hughes. Senator Borah, who recently dis cussed with your correspondent the political situation, 3aid that Hughes would be elected by the small business men. who feared that the Democratic party would not bo able to deal with the great problems which would arise after the European war. Returns from one poll made by him showed that eight Democratic business men out of ten intended to support Hughes for this reason. Such a desertion, in the opinion of Senator Borah, Is talking place in other parts of the country and in sufficient numbers to carry states heretofore considered doubtful for the Republican party. Returns reoel% - ed by the Republican congressional committee this week from primaries and registrations show : that the party has cast a prepon- [ derating vote in all primaries in pivotal states, and that the registration by the i Republicans in these states exceeds i that of the Democrats and Progres- i sixes combined. In New York the Re publican enrollment is 738,631, the Democratic 651.873. and the Progres sive 46,206. Claims that are consid ered conservaUve give New York to Ihe Republicans in November bv 26.00 P. From the Indiana Republican state i committee comes the information that registration in that state will take place- October 9. The primaries were j held March 7 last. In those primaries \ it is shown the combined vote for the Democratic candidates for governor was 159.737, while the combined'vote for the Republican candidates for the same office was 209.043. Perhaps the most striking results so far obtained, however, were those of Hie primaries in New Jersey Tuesday. President Wilson in 1912 polled 175.259. The vote cast for Repub lican candidates for the nomination for governor and senator Tuesday ex reeded this figure, while that for Pemocratic candidates fell far below. * Dr. Evans, Former M. E. Oct. s.—With Connelslville coal for byproduct oven uses commanding $2 a ton and with furnace coke steadily approaching $4, and the demand for both unabated, every plant in the region would prob ably be in operation if it were possible to secure the required number of la borers. Relief was expected with the ap proaoh of cooler weather, but opera tors declare the conditions show signs of becoming worse instead of better. The combined production of coal and coke during tho week reached 655,000 1 tons, of which 243,000 tons was coal I for byproduct ovens. * BROTHERHOOD MEETS Cleveland.
