LINCOLN HOME IS
GIVEN TO NATION
[Continued From First Page]
passed through Louisville early this I
morning, he was greeted by a crowd |
of several thousand persons. They.
surged about the railroad station and |
cheered.
Non Belongs to Nation
The President to-day expressed j
great pleasure over the receptions ac- j
corded him by large crowds which ap- j
plauded at every stop yesterday and j
last night, it was his first touch of t
campaigning this year and he liked it.
West Virginia and Kentucky gave him J
a very warm welcome.
The humble little log cabin in which
Abraham Lincoln was born and the
farm of 110 acres about which he t
played during the early years of his j
boyhood, is now the property of the i
American people.
After suffering the vicissitudes of !
neglect and decay of nearly a hun-j
j dred years the cabin, once In the pos- i
j session of a traveling showman, is back
lon its original site, sheltered within
walls of a magnificent granite me
[morial hall.
Accompanying the title to the farm
and cabin is an endowment fund of
[ $50,000 for the maintenance of the j
grounds and the memorial hall.
General John B. Castleman, of!
■ Louisville, a man Abraham Lincoln !
I once stood ready to save when he was |
jin danger of being condemned to j
i death, by a Federal court martial, in- I
troduced former Governor Joseph W.
of Missouri, president of the |
| Lincoln Farm Association, the first i
j speaker at the ceremonies at which
I the title was transferred.
Roosevelt Placed Cornerstone
j The cornerstone of the memorial j
] hall was laid by Theodore Roosevelt, j
j February 12, i 909, on the hundredth!
i anniversary of the birth of the "Great j.
i Kmancipator." On November 9, 1911. j
jit was formally dedicated by President
I William H. Taft. To-day it became I
i the property of the whole American
! people.
j To its construction more than 270. j
I 000 persons contributed amounts rang
! ing from twenty-five cents to $25,000,1
which totaled approximately $383,000. j
The balance from this fu-nd after pay- I
ing for the construction of the memo- J
rial hall and for the preliminary work
: of turning the farm into a great public j
| park is the sum which to-day was j
(turned over as an endowment fundi
j for the maintenance of the building j
i and grounds.
j The hall is a beautiful granite build
ing standing at the top of a small hill.
I It faces toward a big spring at the
I bottom of the slope, which proved
i the determining factor in the choice
I of Thomas Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's !
| father, when he was casting about for j
; a site upon which to build his home.'
Rising from the bottom to the top j
of this slope is a long flight of wide ;
J granite steps, flanked on either side i
!by a row of popular trees together
! with a box hedge. A box hedge also I
surrounds a small plaza at the foot of j
| the steps, in the middle of which is a !
itall flagpole from which the Stars and j
j Stripes will always be kept waving.
Inside the big granite building the ]
i Lincoln cabin stands upon the spot on
I which Thomas Lincoln erected it 110 j
years ago. It is surrounded by a I
heavy bronze chain for no one fs to be j
| permitted to enter its portals. Upon
(the interior walls of the memorial hall !
j is carved Lincoln's Gettysburg address,
land a record of the Lincoln ancestry.
