of the first hour approximating 250,-
000 shares, exceeded the entire out
put of some recent sessions. Decline"
of the usual character of profit taking
were followed by a fresh inquiry
which carried leading issues notably
Reading, to higher levels. There was
another and more moderate reversal
in the second hour, with considerable
diminution of activity. United States
Steel wavered, probably in anticipa
tion of an indifferent July tonnage
statement. Towards midday there
came a spirited demand for Marines,
but quotations elsewhere were slightly
irregular. Bonds were steady.
