RAILS'STRENGTH
HELPS MARKET
Reading and Union Pacific
Gain Substantial Fractions;
Motors Yield
By Associated Press
New York. Aug. 4. Much of the
early firmness was due to the strength
of Union Pacific and Reading, both
gaining substantial fraction, but re
current weakness was shown by
sugars, which were persistently press
ed for sale.
Motor issues also yielded, but
showed renewed strength later, re
covering under further advance in
shipping shares. Dealings in general
were more narrow than yesterday, the
approach of the week-end being indi
cated in the small attendance of
traders on the exchange and commis
sion houses reported a lack of public
interest at out-of-town centers. Bonds
were irregular.
