U. S. STEEL HAS
STRONG OPENING
Trading in Street Brisk in
Early Hours; Many French
Notes Sold
By Associated Press
New York, July 26.—United States
steel was the center of Interest at the
opening to-day, the "extra" 1 per cent,
dividend coming as a surprise to the
short interest. Steel's initial offering
* e( ?, of 15,005 shares at 86% to
4 ollowed by 100 shares at 87, a
maximum gain of a point. Other
shares of the same class rose a point
or better, with similar advances in
munitions, motors and equipments and
almost twb for Industrial Alcohol. Re
actions of fractions or more followed
the selling for profits. There were
large transactions in the new French
notes at a slight concession.
| New York, July 26. Failure of
the market to respond to the steel
statement and extra dividend was a
distinct disappointment. -Steel, which
made up over one-third of the first
hour's business, surrendered all its ad
vance before noon and other leaders,
including Reading and Union Pacific
were heavy.
