THE BIRTH OF OLD GLORY
If you were walking down one of
the business streets of Philadelphia
to-day, you might see a little old
house, almost hidden by the ware
houses that tower above it on both
sides. And probably you would won
der how in the world that little old
house came to be left there when all
the property around had been built up
for business purposes. It is just an
other proof that while Americans are
apt to think a good deal of money and
business, they also save room in their
hearts for patriotism, for it is just in
that little house that "Old Glory" was
born. And that happened one hun
dred and forty years ago, in 1776.
"The colonies" were then at war
with England and General Washing
ton asked the Continental Congress
to decide upon some one emblem to
stand for all the colonies. Congress
appointed a committee of three men,
one of whom was Washington himself,
to "designate a suitable flag for the
nation."

Business sessions of the fifteenth
annual convention of the Pennsylvania
State Association of Post Office Clerks,
opened this morning in the Senate
Caucus room at the State Capitol. Af
ter the customary addresses of wel
come, officers were elected as follows:
President, A. R. Goetz, of Altoona;
first vice-president, J. A. Hess, Dußois;
second vice-president, N. C. Keating;
Scran ton; secretary, S. W. Godley, Eas
ton; treasurer, H. K. Rife, Chambers
burg; financial secretary, Harry Gar
ner, Reading.
President Goetz had charge of the
morning session, and E. M. Longe
necker, president of the Harrisburg
branch called the convention to order.
The Rev. Henry W. A. Hanson, pastor
of Messiah Lutheran Church, gave the
invocation. Owing to the illness of
Mayor E. S. Meals, the address of wel
come to the city of Harrisburg, was
given by Commissioner E. Z. Gross.
The welcome from the Harrisburg post
office men was extended by Postmaster
Frank C. Sites. President Goetz re
sponded to both addresses.
More than 100 delegates arrived yes
terday for the entertainment features
of the program. In the afternoon the
Harrisburg post office team defeated
the Lancaster nine, 12 to to 0. The
Lancaster men came to this city in a
large auto truck, returning last night.
Delegates were entertained at a
vaudeville show at Paxtang Park last
night.
Business sessions were resumed this
afternoon several minor items being
disposed of. Officers' reports were
submitted, after which the sessions
closed. To-night a banquet will be
served to the delegates at the Colonial
Country Club.
