EXCLUSIVE CLOTHING FOR
MEN OF REFINED TASTE
A. J. Simms, merchant tailor and
draper of exclusive clothes for men at;
22 North Fourth street, began busi- |
ness in Harrisburg in 1895 at the rear j
of storeroom, 408 Market street. It !
was an unpretentious beginning, but |
_ through conscientious merchandising |
and high grade work his patronage I
steadily grew to such proportions as j
to demand larger quarters, or as Mr. j
Simms puts it, "to come out of the j
little storeroom in the rear, to the i
front and stay out."
Out he came and has stayed out j
j ever since. His display rooms are the |
j mecca for men of exclusive clothes- j
taste, and he numbers among his
| many patrons, men who first came to
i him eleven years ago when he started
j out in business.
The Simms shop is displaying some
striking clothes for men for summer
wear, embracing the most stylish
weaves and patterns for the season,
j Orders and busy workrooms indicate
_ the preference of better dressers for
i custom tailored garments, and those
who seek wearing apparel of the dif- I
ferent type, should start this stason I
to know the pleasure and enjoyment I
that goes with the wearing of a Simms j
made garment. Prices are unusually I
reasonable and will prove as pleasing
i as the garments themselves.—Adver
j tisement.
. I "OUT O FTHE HIGH RENT
DISTRICT" IS THEIR SLOGAN
Up in the city of Boston, away back
in 1870 was organized a company that!
since has installed branches In most j
,an of the larger cities of the East
and West. The company was known
as Gately and Fitzgerald and until
1908 the original and all branch
houses were known by that name,
when the company was incorporated
as the Gately and Fitzgerald Supply
Company. The Harrisburg branch
was opened in 1882. which makes the
local store one of the oldest in the or
ganization.
Conspicuous in the growth of the
local store has been the efforts of
Frank R. Downey. From awav up
along the Philadelphia and Erie "rail- |
< road, in the little town of Emporium |
| that nestles among the mountains, j
came Frank R. Downey, the manager
jof the Gately & Fitzgerald Supply
Company, 31 South Second street. He
brought with him a business capacity
and knowledge of affairs that soon put
him to the front in Harrisburg, and
there he is at present.
As a boy he went to work with
.' Gately & Fitzgerald in Emporium as a
canvasser, and in 1886 he was placed
in charge of their leases. Gradually
becoming one of the indispensables in
a big firm he was sent to Harrisburg
in 1903 as the manager of the company
in this city, and he has been here
\ ever since.
I In 1908 the company was incorpor
ated, with Mr. Downey as the manag
j ing head, and he has conducted a most
! successful business. His business-like
manner, and his qualifications for his
position have made htm a man to be
i looked up to by the public.
Mr. Downey believes in Harrisburg
i as a progressive city, and is doing his
j share to boom along the Greater Har
risburg In which he has so much inter
est. In the few years of his residence
': in this city he has proved himself a
'man of the highest business integrity
and possessed of the highest traits of
! citizenship. Among his other accom
plishments he is an expert ad writer
and ail his firm's local advertising is
I fresh from his pen.—Advt.

HARRISBURG TELEGRAPH
NEW L. C. SMITH TYPEWRITER
MODEL OF SILENCE, EFFICIENCY
The new model 8 L. C. Smith &
I Bros, typewriter, according to George
| P. Tillotson, of 211 Locust street, em
bodies all the features necessary to
J enable the operator to turn out the
! highest class work, whether simple
| letter writing or the more complex
| and varied forms of typewriting de
f manded by modern business,
j It is the result of the twenty-seven
I years" experience of the Smith Broth
. ers in typewriter manufacturing. Dur
| ing this long period of time they have
| been studying the needs of the user; I
j determined to build the best writing j
! machine that brains, capital and labor
could produce.
Into every one of the 300,000 L. C.
i Smith & Bros, typewriters now in use
| has gone the best material, the most
skilled labor *tnd the ripened judgment
of the most expert typewriter men.
This is the reason why each new model
offered by the L. C. Smith & Bros.
Typewriter Co. has marked an im
portant epoch in the typewriter in
dustry.
Deserving special attention is the
fact that the new model 8 has certain
improvements that make it the most
i silent running efficient typewriter ever
i placed on the market. Manufacturers 1
j have long striven to secure this quality I
j of silence, but the new model 8 comes
| nearer to being an absolutely silent j
typewriter than any writing machine
! ever produced—without sacrificing any
other essential features. Former mod
els of the L. C. Smith & Bros, type
writer have been more quiet than
other makes, but in the new model 8 !
the manufacturers have succeeded in
reducing the element of noise to a
minimum.
Office workers will welcome the !
I silent running typewriter because it j
j means less annoyance and greater j
: office efficiency. They will be glad to
learn that there is a silent running
typewriter of the high reputation
borne by the L. C. Smith & Bros., i
combining a.U the good features of;
earlier models with new advantages [
that keep pace with the present-day!
needs of operators. Tt will be a relief
to have writing machines that will not |
"get on the nerves," interfere with
mental processes or prevent hearing
over the telephone.
Aside from the question of annoy
ance. it is a well-known fact that the
I greater the noise in machinery, the
i greater the wear. The loose-working,
j loud, clattering machine not only gives
out soonest, but takes more energy to
operate.
In considering the merits of a type
writer the prospective purchaser is in
terested first of all in what the ma- :
chine will do for him. While it is from |
the standpoint of service to the user, |
rather than mechanics, that this de- j
scription is wri ten, we must not lose '
sight of the fact that the L. C. Smith
& Bros, typewriter has been pro- j
nounced by expert mechanics and en- !
gineers to be one of the finest pieces
of mechanism ever produced, and so
scientifically perfect is it constructed j
that it has been happily compared in
this respect to a full-jeweled, high
grade watch.
Its artistic design and general ap
pearance carry conviction that it is
strong, simple, compact, durable, com
plete, efficient.
In the new models all the essential
characteristics of L. C. Smith & Bros,
typewriter construction have been re
tained, and there have been added cer
tain new features, as follows:
One of the most important factors
in bringing about highest efficiency
and service is the use of ball bearings,
the L. C. Smith & Bros, typewriter be
ing the only typewriter in which they
are used at all the points where there
is the most motion and where friction
and wear develop if ball bearings are
not used.
Ninety-eight per cent, of the op
erator's time is consumed in tapping
keys, shifting to write capitals and re
turning the carriage to start a new
line. In the L. C. Smith & Bros, type
writer each of these operations is
made easier and more accurate by the
use of ball bearings.
Tn every typebar are fifteen 1-16
inch hardened steel balls that do away
with friction and allow the close ad
justments that are so necessary to ac
curacy and good typewriting.
On account of the various features
briefly described tn the preceding
pages the L. C. Smith & Bros, type- ,
writer will enable the operator to turn
out more work at a less cost per unit
than any other typewriter ever made.
In arriving at this cost per unit, not
only the price of the typewriter, but.
the cost of operation, repairs, ribbons
and maintenance must be taken into
consideration.
Accurate records kept by large users
of typewriters prove conclusively that
the tynist can dto more work on an
L. C. Smith & Bros, typewriter, that
less repairs have to be made, and
fewer ribbons have to be used than
on any other.
It. will readily bo seen that for the
term of years through which the L. C.

Smith & Bros, typewriter will last, the

DICKERT S DINING ROOM AI
MODEL OF CLEANLINESS,
AND GOOD FOOD
Diekert's Dining Room, at 113 Mar
ket street, is one of those cozy little
dining places where everything seems, j
and is, clean, cool and comfortable; i
one of those "homey" sort of places
where business and professional men
and women, shoppers and out-of-town
visitors like to drop into for a deli
ctously wholesome meal; with cour
teous, neatly dressed young lady wait
resses to serve the well-cooked and
properly seasoned foods.
About eight months ago this little j
restaurant and dining room was placed '
j under the new management and since j
I that time T. K. Murray, the new man
; ager has done much to Increase its '
| growing popularity.
j The foods are served table de hote, i
In the most delightful manner imag-!
[ inable. The snowy linen, the spark- !
i ling glassware, the glistening silver, |
I add just the necessary touch to put aj
j keen edge on the appetite of an epicure, j
! Next time you're downtown on a shop
| ping tour, instead of hurrying home to
| prepare a hasty lunch, drop in and no
■tice the class of people who patronize
j Diekert's. And notice the perfectly
j delightful way your food is served you.
i And then, notice the moderate cost of I
your lunch; you'll wonder how such
appetlzingly prepared food can be
served at such reasonable prices.—Ad- I

TIP TO POULTRYMEN
County Commissioner Uses Turtle's
Eggs to Inveigle Hen Into Laying
Until one sad day last week, Hen- j
rietta —"Hen," for short—had faith- ]
fully fulfilled her destiny as the prize
egg-laying white Wyandotte of Coun
ty Commissioner H. C. Wells' Speece
i ville chicken farm.
The story of Hen's fall and rise j
| was related at to-day's meeting of the'
commissioners by ex-Sheriff Wells j
; himself; he added that the tale is
true, too.
I "Never had Hen refused to eontrib- !
! ute her daily bit toward helping to re- i
i duce the high cost of living," said i
I Mr. Wells. "Always she would lay j
until last week, when all she did was j
to lay down on the job."
With tt all the ex-sheriff, who says j
he knows all kinds of chickens pretty
thoroughly, figured that Hen was a
wee bit vain of her job as the feml- !
nine leader of his yard. Knowledge i
of that trait coupled with the discov
ery of a 15-pound "snapper" turtle 1
and some forty odd turtle eggs, sug
gested an Idea to the commissioner,
the successful working out of which is
the reason for this story.
Ex-Sheriff Wells carefully collected
all the turtle eggs and placed them In
Hen's nest. If she had any pride
of birth or breeding at all, he figured, i
one glance at such r.n enormous lot of I
eggs would be sufficient to spur her to j
better things. Ordinary hens' eggs j
wouldn't do for the test, he thought;!
Hen might think It a tip to hatch, j
Whether or not the ex-sheriff's scheme I
was really effective is a matter of con- .
.lecture; at any rate Henrietta began
laying again the very next day and I
she's been doing well ever since. And
i the turtle eggs have long since been;
| made tnto soup.
