The correction of Benton's military
record was brought about by Con- I

appealed. Benton was severely
wounded In the battle of Petersburg,
l.lune 17, 1864, and was sent to a
Philadelphia hospital on a furlough.' j
Through a mistake he was marked as
a deserter. This has been changed.
