ELECTRICITY TO
ELIMINATE SMOKE
Hill Shoe Company Takes
First Step to Abate Long
Standing Nuisance
Partial solution of the "smoke nui
sance" problem which has annoyed
the residents of the Hill sections of the
Eighth and Ninth wards for months
has been worked out by the Devine &
Yungel shoe manufacturing company
in substituting electricity for steam
motive power.
Several months aso a lot of Ihe resi
dents of the section, which includes
many of the newer-little homes on the
Hill, organized in a mass meeting to
make a formal protest against the
smoke.
The Devine & Yungel plant, the
Rnss Brothers Ice cream establishment
and the Sanitary in Six
teenth near Walnut, were the chief
manufacturing firms complained of.
To date all these firms have evinced
their desire to co-operate with the
people of the, neighborhood in trying
to reduce the nuisance of the smoke.
The Russ Brothers plant has installed
a new grate and the laundry has put
in different facilities which will even
tually help to reduce the trouble to a
minimum. The Devine & Yungel com
pany, however, went a step farther;
that enterprising little firm electrified
its whole plant.
