FRIDAY EVENING, HARJUSBURO «&#£&» TELEGRAPH 1 APRIL 7, 1916.
I
a fixed compensation, determined in <
advance by the churches. i
In the meantime, into a field of
heated discussion, anxious question-,
ings and fearful solicitude, the Metho- !
dists of Texas have precipitated on a
large scale, a method of evangelism 1 1
that holds promise of large results; 1
and may be the way out for the future, i
This is the simultaneous campaign in i
all the churches, with pastors as 1
preachers, and with the "win one", 1
plan.
This is similar to the Simultaneous '
Preaching .Mission which the Episcopal
Churches all over the land have been j
using. Local congregations In many j
places have adopted it.: the First Pres- ;
byterian Church of Houston, Texas, is j
taking in six hundred new members j
this year by the "win one" idea.
Team Work on a Large Scale.
But it has been left for the six an- j
nual conferences of the Methodist
Church in Texas and New Mexico to
adopt the scheme on a large scale, and
to systematise It effectively and bring
it to a climax. April 16 is "Decision
Day" with the Texas Methodists, and
the following Sunday, which is Easter, i
is set for the great ingathering.
Publicity, with its telling slogans, j
plays a considerable part in this latest
evangelistic movement, though it lacks 1
the personal flavor of the write-ups of
professional evangelists. Thus "the
goal" of the Texas campaign has been i
widely advertised as "One Thousand
Revivals Conducted by One Thousand
Preachers Simultaneously in One Thou
sand Churches and One Thousand De
cision Day Services on Sunday, April
16, and One Thousand Big Classes Re- j
reived Into the Church on Easter,!
April 23. 1916."
Because the Methodist ecclesiastical
machinery is well adapted to produc- 1
ing concerted activity within a speci-1
fled time in behalf of any given cause, >
it has been possible to organize and j
drill the huge force of Methodism in
Texas for this evangelistic objective. ■
Putting It Up to the Preacher.
One common complaint against evan
i gelistlc meetings is that they idolize
the evangelist, who is a bird of pas-1
sage, and that church members are j
i led to make invidious comparisons be-1
I tween him and the local pastor. Some !
| evangelists make more converts for
j themselves than they do for the
I Church.
In order to link up the results of'

evangelistic meetings with the Church, j
as well as to put all the work upon
the whole church membership, this
"Win One" plan has been devised. In-j
stead of a short, swift campaign of fer
vor. this metltod makes the pastor a
leader in a well-organized and sus
tained and systematic effort to enlist
the entire working force of a congre
gation in the effort to convert their
own neighbors and relatives and to
enroll them as members of the local
church. Better a revival with fifty
converts who become working mem
bers of the church than one with five
hundred converts not a ienth of whom
can be found six months after the i
meetings are over.
"Efficiency" is written large over the
Texas plan. It was organized last
Summer at a meeting in Dallas, by Rev.
(Jlenn Flyn, of Beaumont, and was fol
lowed by preliminary meetings for or-1
ganization in September and Decem
ber, and a notable "Inspiration meet-j
ing" at the beginning of March in Dal-j
las. In addition to the General Com-i
inittee, a publicity committee, with W.J
! C. Everett, of Dallas, as chairman, was '
named, and a finance and programme j
i committee also, with O. F. Sensabaugh,
as chdirnian. A special department j
! for the campaign was opened in the j
| Texas Christian Advocate.
With the Printer's Help.
A literary propaganda was instituted !
i among the churches in preparation for
j the April climax. A "Worker's Li-j
! brary" was complied, for the use of
! preachers and laity. This was chosen i
without regard to the denomination of i
} the authors. The List is of interest j
iio church people, and I print it here:,!
"The Ministry of Intercession, An
! drew Murray;
Autobiography, Chas. G. Finney;
Evangelism Exemplified, Luther E.
, Todd;
i The Price of Power. liolden;
i The Passion for Men, Hallenbeck; j
! Taking Men Alive, Chas. G. Trum
bull ;
' Pastoral and Personal Evangelism,'
i Chas. L. Goodell;
The Child for Christ. A. H. Mc
j Kinney;
How to Bring Men to Christ, R. A.
I Torrey;
Everyday Evangelism. Wm. Leete;
The Soul-Winning Church, L. G.
Broughton."
Laying the. TAnex.
' After the bishops and presiding el
ders had given their endorsement to
[the project, and it had been learned
that the churches were sympathetic, a
i schedule like this was laid down: All
I the preachers' meetings engaged to
j give the "Win One" campaign right of
way. .January was set apart for spe
jcial preparation by the preachers,
j February was made the month for or
ganizing the laymen and setting up
J efficiency and increased attendance
I campaigns In the Sunday Schools and
i Epworth Leagues. A religious census
jof the community was included. A
; special drive was to be made for
church letters which newcomers had
failed to present. April Ifi was set
apart as "Decision Day" and "Go To
Church Sunday."
Reports indicate that in the more
than a thousand churches affected
there already has been a great stimulus
of interest. Church members get far
ther by having something to do than
by merely being preached at. The en
listment of workers has been no small
task, but it has already been equiva
lent to a revival /or many congrega
tions.
The conviction that a church and a
| pastor are fully competent to conduct <
their own evangelistic meetings is per- i
haps the greatest contribution of all. L
j If the Texas meetings this month bring I,
I forth the expected results, it is inevit
able that the plan will spread to all '
denominations and to the whole coun-1,
try. I
For two things are assured; The
. Church is newly aroused to the import-:
i ance of evangelism. And, equally, the j <
| Church is discontented with present j
methods of professional evangelism, i
Perhaps the lone star has led the way 1
out—THE RELIGIOUS RAMRI.KR.
