A well-known theatrical manager,
more famous if possible, for the

successes, attending the rehearsal of
one of his plays, noticed that a man
in the orchestra who had to play the
iroinbone was holding the instrument
in front of him and doing nothing.
The manager at once called him to I
account.

THE WAR SPIRIT
A British diplomat was praising the
J cheerful and devoted spirit where
with the women of Britain are doing
j their share of war work.
"There is a story that Illustrates
j this fine spirit," said he.
"A man asked his next-door neigh- j
bor in an English town:
" 'Anybody sick in your house? I
heard a lot of frantic running up and
i down stairs last night. It seems to
go on pretty much all evening."
) "Here, by the way, I'd better ex
j plain that an English bus has a
double dock like tlio New York but of
i Broadway and of Fifth avenue.
"The other man said iu answer to
his friend:
" "Oh, no we've nobody sick. It
was just my wife you heard. You
see, she's taken a job as bus con
ductor and last night she thought
Bhe'd have a bit of practice running
up the steps.' —Washington Star. / '
