STEAMER BEACHED 1

London. Feb. 11. The British
steamship Elswick Manor has been
beached off Yarmouth. Her crew was
saved.
The Elswick Manor sailed from'
Baltimore for Hull on January 19 ]
and passed the Lizard on February 8.
She is owned by the Elswick Steam
ship Company of New Castle and is
340 feet long.
M'THOR DIES

London. Feb. 11. — William Hickman
Smith Aubrey, author and journalist,
died last night at his home in Crovdon.
He was identified with various English
newspapers and was author of several
works on English history. His London
letters on politics, literature, art and
society were published by a syndicate
of American newspapers'. He visited
the I'nited States seven times on lec
turing tours.

The directors, while desirous of'
continuing to extend county assistance j
to these homes and charitable organi
zations, want to make sure such ap- i
propriations are legal in order to
avoid possible complications in the
future. \\ ith this idea in mind the
directorate at a recent meeting asked
all the institutions to submit a report
in detail as to their legal standing,
number of youngsters oared for bv
county, support, etc. Reports of the
number of children maintained in
these institutions by the county total
seventy-one, according to data just
submitted. The additional informa
tion is expected at the next session of
the directors.
To Open Bid* For Asphalt Plant
Office Building —Rids for the con
struction of the new office, laboratory
and storage building at the city as
phalt repair plant will be opened at
noon Monday. February 21, by City
Commissioner W. H. Lynch, superin
tendent of streets and public improve
ments. The structure is to be of
brick.

Moving Books and Records to Old
Cells —The old cells or basement
rooms of the courthouse which had
w
been used as a "lockup" lor years
and which has been abandoned for
the last three years, are now serving
as storage rooms for the oldest books
and records of the county recorder's
office. These old tomes and parch- .
ments crowded the files and shelves
of the recorder's office and Recorder
Lentz moved them all downstairs.
This allowed more room for addi
tional files and shelves.
