MIDDLETOWN CAR
CO. TO GET BIG
RUSSIAN ORDER?
Maxniillnn Groten, of Petro
grad. Visits Arthur King,
President of Company
Presence In Middletown yesterday
of Maxmillau Groten, of Petrogrnd,
Russia, a member of the Russian
Royal Trade Commission, gave rise
to a report that the Middletown Car
Company has booked a large order
for steel cars from the Russian Gov
ernment.
President Arthur King, of the car
company, however, denied this report
this morning and explained that Com
missioner Groten's visit was merely a
personal visit to him.
"We have not, as yet, booked any
orders with the Russian Govern
ment," said President King. "Mr.
Groten's visit was a personal call. He
returned to New York to-day."
The Middletown Car Company re
cently completed a big improvement
program which entailed the expendi
ture of nearly half a million dollars
at its plant in Middletown. For years
the company has built cars for a num
ber of South American railroads and
recently completed a large order for
the Serbian Government. It is now
engaged in turning out an order for
the French Government and has three
Middletown men in that country look
ing after its interests.
George 1. King, son of President Ar
thur King, is now in Russia represent
ing the Rastern car Company, of
Nova Scotia.
The Russian Royal Trade Commis
sion includes some of Russia's most
prominent banking and industrial men
and is in tills country with a view to
tiring about increased trade and better
tra ie relations between these coun
tries.
French Cruiser Shells
Big British Freighter
A By Associated Press
New York. Feb. 9.—Captain J.
Mitchell, of the British freighter Ca
nadian, which arrived here to-day,
confirmed the story brought here
some days ago by the steamer Guiana
of the holding up of the Canadian off
Martinique by the French cruiser
Descartes.
Captain Mitchell said live shots were
tired at his vessel by the cruiser, two
of which struck the pilot house. The
Canadian is built something on the
lines of a torpedoboat and Captain
Mitchell said lie believed the lies
cartes mistook her for an enemy war
ship. After an officer from the crui
ser had examined his papers he was
allowed to proceed.
