nemer, 21 years old, of the French
Ivinß corps, has just brought down
his fifth German adversary and lias
been mentioned for his exploit in an
official communication. Previously he
had been decorated with the cross of
the Ivegion of Honor, the war cross
and the military medal.
M. Guynemer was a lad in college
when the war iiegan and enlisted at
once. He had never been in an aero-
Diane, but at'ier beven days' training
made his trial tliuht for a pilot's
license. Six weeks' training usually is
required.
His work at tlie front began last
April. It was not until December 5
hat he began to make his record by
nunting Herman aeroplanes. At that
lime he brought, down, single handed,
a large (jcrman biplane.
Guynemer flies alone, as did Garros
and Pegroud, but instead of a mono
plane he uses a. great biplane which
makes ninety miles an hour. He ac
