U.S. STEEL AGAIN
MARKET FEATURE
By Associated Press
New York, Jan. 7.—Although open
inn prices to-day were mainly higher,
the market's undertone reflected a
continuance of its recent feverish con
dition. United States Steel was again
the feature with initial sales of 1,000
to over 2,000 shares at 86%, a slight
pain over yesterday's close. Some of
the specialties recently under pressure,
including fertilizer issues showed the
effect of further liquidation. Agricul
tural Chemical Common preferred
yielding over four points. Oil shares
moved erratically, Mexican Petroleum
rising while California declined. Rails
were firm and coppers slightly higher.
General Motors declined 15 to 425.
Some of the weaker Industrial spe
cialties, including oils and fertilizers,
rallied shortly after the opening, but
recoveries were brief, recurrent selling
of an enforced character causing an
other levelling of values. Tennessee
Copper broke 3 % from its high to
58% on news of trouble at the com
pany's local plant. Steel on further
heavy sales, duplicated yesterday's low
of 86, and American Smelting and
Mexican Petroleum manifested weak
ness. while war issues were materially
lower. Recoveries of 1 to 2% points
occurred on another rally in the sec
ond hour. Bonds were steady.

Poor Directors Are
Advised as to Power
in Quarantine Matters
Dauphin county's board of poor di
rectors will not be permitted to donate
any sum at all to any nursing asso
ciation or any similar organization un
less the charitable Institution in ques
tion can be considered under the pro
visions of the act of Assembly which
excepts regularly incorporated organ
izations of a nonsectarian character
not operated for the benefit of any
particular class or persons.
The board was given an opinion to
ihis effect to-day by Solicitor O. G.
Wickershatn. The directors asked
their attorney's advice upon the ques
tion of continuing the old board's plan
appropriating SBO per month to the
\ isiting Nurse Association to conduct
a branch orphanage.
Solicitor Wickersham also advised
the board as to its jurisdiction in car
ing for the families of quarantined
persons and on the question of letting
contracts for supplies. Under the so
licitor's ruling, the county poor board
is required to care for and maintain
the families where the head of the
bouse or the main support i.s restricted
from working because of the quaran
tine laws. Tin- directorate is also re
quired by another ruling to award all
contracts for supplies to the lowest
and best, bidder where the purchasable
quantities cost more than S3OO.
DAI'PHIV COURT HILARS LONG
\RGUMENT ON CORNUKAL CASK
Argument was heard to-day by the
Dauphin county court on the question
of the finances of the Brinser Milling
and Feed company. S. C. Brinser, the
famous manufacturer of Brinser's
cornmeal. had obtained an injunction
against the new company restricting
it from using his formula and labels.
Incidentally the court directed the
Brinser Milling and Feed Company to
pay the Brinser senior the money it
had earned by improper use of the.
original manufacturer's name and
formula. The question of the propor
tionate amount due from the Brinser
Milling and Feed company was before
tjje court to-day.
