S. P. C. A. Notes
The theory of training children to
kindness should begin in the nursery
is the view of modern humanitarians.
Many a mother unconsciously gives
her child its first lesson in cruelty.
How often we see a mere baby seated
on a hobby horse* while the parent
places a whip In its hands saying,
"Now beat the old horse to make It
go!"
A mother who wished to read, toll!
her small son of three to "run away,
Bobbie and chase that old lame lien
around the yard." The child naturally
thought it great fun, and kept up the
fun every day. When grown up this
boy neglected his invalid mother,
shamefully. She could not understand
his Ingratitude, failing to realize ttmt
she was paying the penalty of not
teaching her child consideration for
the weak and helpless.
A man in Philadelphia went to jail
not long ago for thirty days for driving
a horse over a bonfire and kicking the
animal in the stomach when it refused
to stand over the Haines. The poor
beast was badly burned and not able
to work for several weeks. And yet
there are people in this city who ask:
"What's the use of the S. P. C. A .l
I'm sure much of this cruelty 4s all
talk."
Horses have starved to death from
trouble witlvtheir teeth. If a horse
does not eat well have him examined
by a veterinary. His teeth may need
filing or there may be trouble at the
root of a tooth.
Equally important is the shoeing of
a horse. Have a good blacksmith and
remove the shoes of your horses every
four or five weeks. When roads are
icy keep sharp calks on the horse's
shoes.
The Radle Piaster, superior in tone,
action, pumping. Let us demonstrate.
