Mere Handful of Serbs
Are Opposing Advance
Paris, Nov. 24, 5.20 A. M.—"What
appears to be confirmation of the re
port that the Serbian army of General
Bokovitch is now opposing only a thin
screen to the Austro-German ad
vance," says a Saloniki dispatch dated
Monday in the Temps to-day. "The
main forces have been concentrated
on the Kossovo Plain. General Boko
vitch will hurl 90,p00 men against the
12 0.000 Bulgarians guarding the de
files of Katchanik and Kortehou.
"The Serbians may even attempt the
supreme effort of dashing into Uskup
and then on to Veles, there to join
hands with the French. But in order
that the battle shall end in anything
but sublime suicide the operation must
be carried out energetically and suc
cess must be achieved promptly.
"There is good reason to believe the
Bulgarians will not occupy Monastir
until the arrival of the first detach
ments of Austro-German troops."
Democrats Favor Early
National Convention
New York. Nov. 24. Democratic
sentiment, judging from reports from
William F. McCornbs, chairman of the
national committee.^favors an early

commitee it was likely that the con
vention would be held during the first
two weeks of June.
Bids for the convehtlon have been
received from Chicago, St. Louis. Dal
las and San Francisco. Mr. McCombs
expects a full meeting of the members
of the national committee in Washing
ton on December 7, when an effort
will be made to decide upon the time
and place for the convention.

WAR CHARITIES FUNDS
ARI<; GOING ASTRA*
London, Nov. 24.—The Dally Mail
devotes considerable editorial space
to an urgent demand for the sup
pression of "bogus war charities."
"Of the £27,000.000 ($135,000,000)
raised for charitable purposes sine*
the beginning of the war." says the
•Mall, "those who know best. believe
that a very considerable part bus
to enrich clever exploiters of publie
philanthropies. A case recently came
under police notice where only £7O of
£1,200 collected had found its way into
the official charity bank account, the
remainder vanishing in expenses.'
The Mull argues for a system of
licenses.
