DR. BRUMBAUGH ON
BROWN DECISION
Backs Attorney General and
Says Faith Will Be Kept
With Children
Governor Brumbaugh late this after
noon made the following comment
upon the decision of Attorney General
Brown that employment certificates
[now In the hands of minors shall be
good until they reach the age of six
teen. The Governor hacks up the at
torney general with these words:
"The fear expressed In soma quar
ters that children now legally em
ployed in our Pennsylvania industries,
but who (lo not possess all the stand
ards of fitness fixed by the law that be
comes operative January 1, 1916, will
be required to return to school to
complete the sixth grade, has happily
been dispelled by the wise decision of
the Attorney General.
"The State has a contract with these
children which it never intended to
nullify. We shall keep faith with
these children and we believe the em
ployers will also keep faith and retain
them in the industries of the Com
monwealth. We shall not compel them
to return to school and the employers,
if wise, will not return them to the
streets. They will, of course, work
only 51 hours per week atter January
1 1, 1916, and attend the continuation
school for eight hours per week. To
i this humane and Important decision no
lone In interest can justly object.
I "These children are the wards of
[the Commonwealth, and it will not
willingly allow any harm or distress
to come to them."
