Bethlehem Steel made the new record of 467 on a two-point rise. Willys-Overland sold at a new high with a gain of 9 points to 253. New York, Oct. 15.—A gallowi stored in the dome of the Federal building here may be dragged forth from Its dusty restingplace, set up and a man hanged upon it, although legal execution by hanging Is pro hibited in the State of New York. A federal law of death by hanging for murder on the high seas is still in force and if August Berklein is found guilty in the United States Dis trict Court, the penalty is hanging and he may be hanged anywhere in the jurisdiction of' the court, which extends from Governor's Island to Buffalo. Berkiein iS a steamship fireman and is accused of stabbing to death another fireman on the Clyde liner, Commanche, last July, while at sea. It has been forty-six years since a federal execution took place in this city. At that time a pirate was hanged on Governor's Island. After the hanging, the gallows was taken down and stored in the dome of the Federal building. Wed Maimed Heroes, British Rector Urges Special 1o Thf Telegraph London, Oct. 14. The Rev. Ernest Houghton, a Bristol rector, has started an appeal to patriotic women of the nation to give their lives to ameliorate the condition of maimed heroes of the war by marrying them.
