HAUNTED
Have you a garden where you walk
and see
The golden flowers of Spring
Crown the new greenery
With newer blossoming?
A garden ail green growth and witch
ery.
j And does the purple evening come for
you
Slow star by slow white star,
Trailing its robe of dew
j With not a sound to mar
The peace, save bird-calls falling faint
and few?
Ah well, I have no garden for my feet
To tread! The walls of stone
Press on the bitter street
Where I drift by, alone,
Dreading the wolf's glare in the eyes
X meet.
And yet. have you not sometimes turn
ed your head,
Just bending to a rose.
Thinking you heard the tread
And stir of one who goes
Down old remembered paths—but now
is dead V

THE DESERTED MILL
It stands alone and silent
Beside the singing stream;
And at the time of twilight
The sunset's fading beam
Rests on It like the shadow
Of some forgotten dream.
Its wheels have long been quiet;
It braves the rain and snow;
And yet its heart is aching
With emptiness and woe;
And I am sure it misses
The grain that used to flow.
Beneath its sloping shelter.
In June the lovers stand.
And tell a sweet old story
That lives in every land.
(They think that it is sleeping
And does not understand!)
It stands alone and wistful
Reside the sighing stream;
I And at the time of twilight
The sunset's dying beam
j Rests on It like the promise
Of some forgotten dream.
—Margaret E. Sangster, Jr., in Christian
Herald.

ROOSEVELT FIRES ON
HYPHENATED YANKEES
Ex-President Says German-Amer
icans Should Be Made to Fight
For U. S. or Be Shot
\
By Associated Press
Piattsburg, N. Y„ Aug. 26.—Colonel
Theodore Roosevelt, speaking; last
night on the drill plain of the United
States Military Instruction Camp en
the shore of Lake Champlain, de
nounced in unmeasured terms the
hyphenated American, the profes
sional pacifist, the poltroon, the "col
lege sissy," and the man -with "a mean
soul, all of whom he let it be clearly
understood he considered beyond the
pale of real and true Americanism.
It was a regular old-time Roosevelt
speech, and the Colonel was at his
best. The Kaiser, had he been pres
ent, would certainly not have been
among those who so vociferously ap
plauded what the ex-President had to
say.
"The German-Americans," declared
the Colonel, "had defied the United
States even to the verge of treason,"
he said, "in the belief that no one
would dare offend the German-Amer
ican vote; hut if you gentlemen think
as I do and war were declared, these
gentlemen would fight or be shot, ana
they could choose whether they
would he shot in front or in the back.
"And you must remember that
while people will sympathize with a,
weak man who is wrong they won't
sympathize with the most powerful—
not with us, the richest nation in the
world, if we fail to prepare to defend
our own. The surest way to invite
disaster is to be rich, aggressive and
unarmed."
"Probably no body of citizens in the
United States during the last five years
have wrought so efficiently for na
tional decadence and international de
gradation as the professional pacific
ists. the peace-at-any-price men. who
have tried to teach our people that
silly all-inclusive arbitration treaties
and the utterance of famous plati
tudes at peace congresses are substi
tutes for adequate military prepared
ness.
Sneers at Professional Pacificist*
"As for the professional pacificists
and the poltroons and colege sissies
who organize peace-at-any-price so
cieties, and the mere money-getters
and mere money-spenders, they
should be made to understand that
they have got to render whatever
service the country demands.
"Camps like this are the best possi
ble antidotes to hyphenated American
ism."
