An Advance
By Associated Press
New York, Aug. 11. Standard
stocks were again to the fore at the
opening of to-day's market, yester
day's demand for those issues being
resumed. Union Pacific was the
prominent feature. Its initial sale of
1600 shares being made at an advance
of 1% points while St. Paul, Northern
Pacific, Atchison and Louisville and
Nashville soon rose 1 to 1%. These
gains were coincident with word from
Washington that a number of foreign
rate increases had been granted by
the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Minor roads, like Kansas City South
ern and Erie also were active and
t strong. United States Steel was in
clined to react after a moderate ad
vance, and some of the war specialties,
notably Bethlehem Steel ana Cruciblo
Steel lost 2 to 3 points.

Deal in Dark Horses
If the contention of George R., and
Fannie L. Jones be true, S. Cooper
tried to sell them a "dark norse" too
often.
Cooper and the Central Trust Com
pany have sued the Jones out on a
note and in asking permission to have
the Judgment opened and prepare a
defense the Jones to-day stated their
reasons. The petition was filed with
Prothonotary Harry F. Holler and Is
returnable in ten days.
In October 1912 according to the
defendants they bought a horse from
Cooper for slfis and gave a note for
the amount. The horse wasn't at all
what it was cracked up to be. A "dark
chestnut horse" suitab:e for hauling
was negotiated for but soon after the
horse was given into the Jones' posses
sion, it developed bumps and things on
the shoulders and wouldn't do at all.
Cooper had promised to "make good"
and in answer to complaints Cooper
gave them another dark horse—this
time a black. This dark norse, it
developed, was vicious and kicked like
"sixty" and naturally wouldn't do for
hauling. So negotiations were opened
up again and a light bay was given to
the Jones'. He got sick and wouldn't
do at all either. Naturally the Jonas'
refused to agree to th« original sale.
Whereupon the action against them
was begun.
CONSULT MUSSER
ON BRIDGE BID
At a late hour to ( -day the county
commissioners had not awarded the
contract fo rthe new Nineteenth
street bridge • across the Philadelphia
and Reading tracks as they wished
first to consult with President Frank
R Musser of the Harrlsburg Rail
ways Company. The traction com
pany expects to pay part of the cost
and the commissioners want that cor
poration to be satisfied with the award.
Mr. Musser was out of town to-day
and it was considered doubtful if de
finite action could be had before Fri
day.

THE BIG PERIBONKA
The regipn northeast of Lake St.
John is all at one side where nobody
thinks of going except a few trappers.
The mining and timber have not seem
ed rich enough to' draw the white
man.
The main avenue of approach is the
Big Peribonka, the largest of the Lake
St. John rivers. The real wilderness
begins in the neighborhood of Lake
Tchotogoma, sixty miles up the river.
Beyond that stretches a vast region as
fresh and wild, as natural and primi
tive, as anything discovered by Colum
bus and with fewer human tenants. In
the last fifty miles of its course the
Big Perlhonka comes down from its
high plateau roaring through defiles
of ragged rock nnd making necessary
ten or more portages, several of them
In the perpendicular style of architec
ture. Of late years a rude wagon road
has been extended through the burnt
over country between the village of
Mistook near Lake St. John and the
Chute McLeod, the last but one of
these Peribonka falls. The necessity
of climbing up a steep river has thus
been largely eliminated. Lake Tchoto
goma may be reached from the other
direction where the means of access
have also been Improved; and one
coming up from Quebec by the
Saguenay hoat should go in from that
quarter and come out by the new route
down the Peribonka.
The outfit is car. led from Chicoutlml
at the head of steamboat navigation,
up to the foot of rough water In the
river, a distance of seven mile*. Then
comes a wagon journey of twenty-two
miles northerly to the Lac des lies.—
Outing.
2,500 Zapatistas Flee
Before Army of Twenty
Mexico City, July 31 (via Vera Cruz,
Aug. 8, and Laredo, Texas, Aug. 10,
delayed in transmission). —In the last
twenty-four hours this capital has
seen three changes of government.
Such a kaleidoscopic shifting of the
political status has alarmed even this
city, accustomed as it has become to
rapid changes of political leadership.
Shortly after the noon hour yester
day the inhabitants were startled by
the precipitate evacuation of the
Zapata army before an invisible enemy.
Two hours later the Villa contingent
of the former army of occupation ral
lied and street fighting ensued with
the invading Carranza forces.
At 5 o'clock the firing, which had
been a continual, rattle for the two
previous hours, ceased and in ita place
was heard the clanging of bells. Offices
and stores which had been in the line
of fire were opened and the occupants
emerged to learn that the citv had
been captured by Captain Manuel
Sanchez and twenty men of Carranza's
army. It is estimated that 2,500 Za
pata soldiers fled before this force, be
lieving it to be much larger.
THOSE S'VORK SURFACE CARS
If ever you go down to "Noo York,"
vou'd better put a few railroad tor
pedoes in your grip to stop street cars
when you wish to embark. Whether
the transit company or the city itself
is responsible for the eternal changing
of traffic rules is more than I can say
without further investigation. I only
know that on the very day of this
writing I was unable to get myself lo
cated at the proper corner to gain pas
sage. The first motorman yelled as
he passed me, "The other side!" which
I did, and the next one shouted in a
mixed tongue, as I raised a command
ing hand for him to stop and let me
on, "Back, ye rube, to the opperslto
soide!"—so I did as he requested also,
and waited for the third car to see
what were the further desires of the
company's subordinates. *The next
car sifted by without much ado, and
much less notice of me, but the motor
man was kind enough to suggest that
I avail myself to the car back of him,
as he was already full, and he looked
it, only he didn't go into detail in
mentioning the fact. When I explain
ed to a policeman that I wished to
get from where I stood to Sixty-Third
and Broadway, and unbosomed my
woes against the trolley company, he
assured me that they were "a rotten
bunch," and if it weren't for the effi
ciency of the police force 'no one
would never get nowhere! Now,
I'll tell you what you do," said he. "It's
about a mile to where you wants to
get, so you'd better walk down to Bar
clay Street Ferry and take a boat to
Hoboken, then change to a Twenty-
Third Street boat. When you get over
to Twenty-Third, take a taxi to yer
destination and mark me, you'll be
there an hour before you can figure
how to do it by these surface cars!"
Do you blame me for still living In
Horseheads? "Zim," in Cartoons
Magazine.
