Theory of Gravitation
;a : I
PROF. THOMAS JEFFERSON
JACKSON SEE
Professor Thomas Jefferson Jack
son See. who Is In charge of the naval
observatory at Mare Island, Cal„ has
announced to the Royal Society of
London a new theory of the cause
of gravitation. The society to which
Professor See submitted his theory
was the same one to which Sir Isaac
Newton made his first report after
discovering the law of gravitation.
Professor See announced In St. ]
Louis that next September, on the 1
260 th anniversary ot Newton's dis
coveries, he would make public many
more details concerning his theory
as to the cause of gravitation and
other phenomena he has had under
observation.
Professor See contends that gravi
tation is an electrical phenomenon
which is cause<} by elementary elec
tric currents circulating about atoms
of matter. This theory is an exten
sion and elaboration, of physical laws
first demonstrated by the French
physicist. Ampere, ninety-five years
ago.
Ampere showed that two parallel
currents of electricity, flowing in the
same direction, attract each other,
but repel when flowing in opposite
directions.
Much of the complicated electrical
machinery of the present day Is made
possible by the adoption of this prin
ciple. Professor See goes beyond this
hypothesis and asserts the entire uni
verse Is governed by forces dependent
upon electricity In motion.
"Gravitation," the professor says,
"is not an instantly acting force, but
is transmitted through space at the
same rate as sunlight. Thus it would
come from the sun to the earth in
eight minutes."
DOSTOIEVSKY AND THE DISH
RAG
I desire to consider Dostoievsky
from one angle alone the angle,
namely, of the dish rag. The angle of
of the dish rag. Dostoievsky shows us
—to speak fantastically—the souls of
dish rags. He lets us hear the lamen
tations of the lowest, the vilest, the
most shameless. From the mud the
I drunkard speaks. The coward speaks
from his black sulking-place. Thieves
speak, and the murderer of old wo
men; harlots speak, and men who live
on harlots' gain. And 10, all those
voices are beautiful. They are sad and
beautiful. All those ruined souls are
like you and me. Like you and me,
they love virtue. Like you and me,
they loathe vice. And they mourn,
down there in the morass, they mourn
their incredible fall as you and I
would mourn if, by some incredible
mischance, we ourselves fell.
Dostoievsky reveals the soul of the
lowly and the degraded. That is his
essence. That is the one thing which
he alone can do. The souls of our
great picturesque, grandiose sinners
have been revealed to us. lamenting in
their jewelled robes, their marble
palaces, from time immemorial. But
the soul of the drunkard kept in drink
by his harlot daughter; the soul of tho
elderly coward pawnbroker whose girl
wife kills herself rather than endure
his petty cruelties; it Is Dostoievsky
alone who reveals the terrible beauty
of these. W. B. Trites, in The
North American Review.
