RUSH 111 in
TO en SHS
New Vork, July 29. There was a
rush to buy war stocks at the opening
of the market to-day. United States
Steel, Crucible Steel, Westinghouse
Electric and Allis Chalmers were
bought in lots of several thousand
snares and these stocks, as well as
Bethlehem Steel, reached new high rec
° s ; of Crucible Steel was
rarticularly vigorous. The opening was
,000 shares at 68 to 70, compared with
yesterday's dose of 65%. The price
mounted rapidly to 75%, an advance of
30 points on the week. Bethlehem Steel
jumped six points to 270. Westing
house Electric opened with 6.000 shares
at 112 to 11214 as against yesterday's
close of Allis Chalmers rose 2
points to 28%. Railroad shares were
strong, although St. Paul, on which
dividend action is to be taken to-day,
slumped three points.
The advance was too rapid to be
maintained, and after half an hour's
trading a reaction occurred. Bethle
hem Steel fell back eight points.

MARINES AT PORT AU PRINCE
Collier Jason Is Carrying An Ad
ditional 100 Marines to
Scene of Disorder
Washington, July 29.—The French
at Cape Haitien, Haiti, is menaced by
revolutionists and a guard from the
United States auxiliary cruiser Eagle
has been landed to protect it. This in
formation was cabled early to-day to
the State Department by American
Consul Livingston.
Washington, July 29.—With the ar
rival to-day of additional American
marines at Port Au Prince, scene of
the latest Haitien revolution, Rear Ad
miral Caperton's forces for the protec
tion of the lives and property of
Americans and other foreigners were
increased to five hundred. The addi
tional one hundred marines were due
from Guantanamo aboard the collier
Jason. Four hundred marines and
blue jackets from the United States
steamship Washington have already
landed.
Rear Admiral Caperton, in a cable
gram sent last night from Port Au
Prince and received at the Navy De
partment to-day, said:
"The landing force entered Port Au
Prince and bivouackeu for the night
at the Market Place in the northern
part of the city. A guard was placed
at the French legation. No serious
disturbance. This action was decided
on after consultation with the Amer
ican Charge D'Affaires and French and
British Charge D'Affaires. The French
warship, Descartes Is expected to
night.
"Two companies of marines and two
companies of seamen were landed at
5:50 p. m. Have information from
commander of LI. S. S. Eagle report
ing conditions at Cape Haiten quiet,
but Eagle landed twenty men at
Cape Haitien to protect French con
sulate for fear of attack on refugees
there. They were landed at request of
French consul."
NO SECOND COLOSSUS
IN THE STEEL TRADE
[Continued From First Page.]
eral years, in the pendency of the suit
to dissolve the Steel Corporation, the
story of a second consolidation to In
clude the leading Independent steel
companies was given wings once more
in the past week. Telegraphed from
Cleveland, the center of the iron ore
trade, and touched with verisimilitude
by the use of names of well-known
steel manufacturers in proper connec
tion with their respective companies,
the report went to every quarter of the
country. The juxtaposition of the
Bethlehem and Crucible Steel com
panies in a single article would have
bten enough of itself, with the specu
lative fever at its height, to make a
new appeal to imaginations already
under the spell of war millions. But
to these two, which Wall Street latelj?
ha* been making newly famous, were
added the names of seven independent
steel companies with no particular war
records, the whole representing a total,
as the article has it, of $540,500,000
(par value) of bonds and stocks in ex
isting security issues.
"As long as the legality of the Steel
Corporation is in question in the coun
try's highest court, no such consoli
dation will be seriously thought of by
steel manufacturers. It is highly im
probable that the nine companies
named—the Bethlehem, Colorado,
Lackawanna, Republic, Jones &
Luughlln, Crucible, Pennsylvania.
Cambria and Youngstown Sheet and
Ti'be—could ever be gathered into one.
"Without dissent heads of these
companies, as fast as they have been
reached by newspaper inquiry, have
said that the Cleveland report had no
foundation. The fact that the Steel
Corporation end tnese nine companies
represent together 90 to 95 per cent, of
the country's output of steel Ingots is
sufficient reason for saying that apart
from all court decisions, public senti
ment would not tolerate a second Co
lossus In the steel trade. So far as the
export trade is concerned, on which
thr decision upholding the Steel Cor
poration was so largely based, co
operation without integration is now
apparently In sight as a method, nn
dtr government sanction, of extending
abroad the trade of the independent
manufacturers of steel."
