GRADE CROSSINGS
BEFORE COMMISSION
The Harrington Mliis grade cross
ing over the Delaware, ackawanna &
Western Railroad at Montrose was the
subject of complaint filed with the
Public Service Commission to-day by
E. H. True, Burgess of Montrose, and
b . A. Davies, attorney.
The complaint alleges that the cross
ing is over a much traveled highway
and is dangerous; that the railroad
company does not protect it with
watchmen, gates or warning hells. The
railroad has been ordered to answer
the complaint, and Acting Chairman
W. D. B. Ainey has directed John S.
Dohoney to examine the site and make
recommendations.
Mr. Ainey, who resides at Montrose,
and who is familiar with the situa
tion, said: "This crossing is a danger
ous one and needs to be protected;
several accidents have occurred there,
and the railroad company will no
doubt be ordered to place a bell or
erect gates as the inspector may
recommend."
The investigator of accidents of the
commission has been advised that a
crossing watchman will be installed at
Seward, on the line of the Pennsyl
vania Railroad. The petition for this
protection was filed by the chief bur
gess of Seward, I. L. Hedges, who is
particularly interested in the welfare
of the school children who have oc
casion to cross the tracks. He ex
pressed his appreciation for the inter
est the commission has taken in the
matter.
In the matter of the complaint of
H. S. Bomberger of Palmyra, that the
Philadelphia & Reading unreasonably
charged him for disinfecting a cattle
car ,the company says that the charge
was due to an error of its agent.
The Kensington Merchants' Associa
tion, which filed a complaint as to the
routing of cars of the Philadelphia
j Rapid Transit Company in the Ken
sington District, notifies the commis
sion that the complaint has been
satisfied.
The Ellwood City Health District
advises that the complaint, ae to the
failure of the Pittsburgh, Harmony,
Butler & New Castle Railway Com
pany to provide drinking water ac
commodations, has been satisfied.
In all probability the attention of
the Public Service Commission will be
officially called again to the jitney
situation in the course of the next two
weeks,- There are a couple of cases
pending but they do not raise all of
tho questions which have been in the
air. It is expected that a specific case
covering all of the propositions at
issue will be presented «nd a formal
hearing, which will have State wide
effect, be held.
ROTARIANS IN' SESSION'
San Francisco, Cal., July J 9.—The
sixth annual convention of the Inter
national Association of Rotary Clubs
opened here to-day. C. H. Victor, of
San Francisco, president, delivered an
address of welcome to the 3,500 dele
gates in attendance from the United
States, Canada, Great Britain, Aus
tralia and Hawaii.
"RIO IJ" CRANE GETS WATCH
In addition to the reception, "Red"
Crane, of the Richmond team, was given
a big surprise when he came to the bat
at Island Park this afternoon. In be
half of his army of admirers in Harris
burg Mayor John K. Royal presented
Crane with a gold watch. Crano was
unable to reply for some time, but ex
pressed his thanks, and said "he was
glad his home was in Harrisburg."

Press of Business Keeps
Beidleman From "Expo"
Senator E. E. Beidleman, who was
selected by the Governor to represent
the State Senate the Panama-Pacific
Exposition this summer, has been com
pelled to forego the honor. In his let
ter declining the appointment, filed
several weeks ago. Senator Beidleman
gives as his reason a press of personal
business which ho was compelled to
lay aside in order to givfe proper time
to his duties ns senator during the
legislative session that Just closed.
Asked to-day if politics had anything
to do with his remaining at home, the
senator said: "Nothing any more than
that I have never missed voting at a
primary election since I reached vot
ing age, and I do not propose to break
that record at this time."
