UHTTYPE MOTOR Mil IT LOW PRICE WHya-OverUnd Company An nounces Sleeve Valve Motor Near SI,OOO Mark This la a season of surprises In th« Diotor car Industry. The new developments have taken uhe form of multiplying the cylinder! of the old type of motor, of radical price reductions, or a combination such is that covered by the Willys-Knight announcement whloh offers two radical changes—one In motor design, the other In price. The price Is the lowest at which a car with a Knight type motor has been offered to the public. Its reliability, remarkable power, ■moothness of operation and economy have made It famous throughout the world. One of Its chief advantages is Its characteristic of Improving with use. It Is an established fact that the Knight type of motor gives even greater satisfaction the second and suc ceeding years than the first. Its simple Resign and small number of parts in sures it against the various evils that frequently come under the head of motor troubles. Retiming Is never necessary. There Is no guesswork. The entire action Is positive and never fall ing. The Important difference of. the Knight type motor from a poppet valve motor Is In the valve arrangement. The Knight type Is a sleeve valve motor. The valves are merely sliding sleeves. .V.?,*"® are two — one Inside the other sliding up and down between the cylin der wall and piston. In each, openings are placed which, at the proper time in the action of the motor, come oppo site to each other so as to permit the charge of fresh gas from the carbure tor to enter the combustion chamber and similarly for the burnt gases to pass from the cylinder out into the muffler. Inasmuoh as the power of anv motor Is largely determined by having the fresh gas in sufficient quantity enter the cylinders at exactly the right mo ment and upon the complete expulsion of all burnt gases also at exactly the right moment, the poppet valve im poses certain limitations upon all pop pet valve motors. Necessarily the diameter of the pop pet valves Is limited by diameter of the cylinders. Their accuracy as to time or opening and closing Is made uncer tain because dependent upon cams and springs. The large sleeve valves of the Knight type motor permit valve openings mucn larger than can be had with poppet valves. The sleeves have a positive action, as they are opened and closed by positively operated connecting rods, and therefore, there Is no uncertainty either as to the time or extent of the opening. It mut always be exactly right and there will always be a full opening regardless of the speed of the motor. There has heen a more or less general Idea among those only partly familiar ■with the Knight construction, that the operation of the sleeve valves might of fer some difficulty. This Is because It has not been known that the sleeves do not have to be made to a tight fit to hold compression as is true of the pis ton. The sleeves In operation are al wavs covered with a film of oil. Even more Important to the suc cessful operation of the Knight type motor than the fact that the leevet. a . re not called upon to retain compres sion is the relatively slow movement of these sleeves. Whereas In the v\ Illys-Knlght motor the piston has a stroke of 4*4 Inches, the sleeve valve travels but one Inch at one-half the motor speed. In other words, the sleeve valves travel at only one-ninth of the piston speed. This means that your motor Is traveling at the rate of 900 revolutions per minute, and ■which would be equivalent to a car speed of 24.6 miles per hour, the sleeve valves are only traveling at a rate at the pistons would travel at a speed of 100 revolutions per minute. Carbon deposit that forms so rapidlv in the poppet valve motor and neces sitates frequent cleaning. Is not notice able In the sleeve valve tvpe. The small amount that does form has a beneficial effect, serving to srive sur faces a glass-like finish. Thus the longer ttie motor is used the quieter anrl smoother it becomes. T h ,t, remarkably low price is made possible only by the great manufactur ing facilities of the Overland plant and the fact that the car will be produced In larger quantities than anv Knight duced m 0 ° ar W3S ever before P r °" Heretofore Knight type motored cars nave been looked upon as belonging to a de luxe field, all their own. Their sale has been restricted to the com paratively few people who could affora to pay a high price for the advantages and comforts which this motor affords i-«lKe most other Improvements that have been made In the automobile, the Knight motor upon its introduction was obtainable only at a high price. Its superior qualities, however, have caused a widespread demand among all classes of motorists and it is to meet this de mand that John N. Willys has brought this popular type motor within the reach of the average pocketbook. \t? H , as , ,hlslla t est Production of Mr Willys is known, is a large, power ful. five-passenger touring car.
