FIRMNESS RULES AT
OUTSETOF TRADING
Market Shows Tendency to Harden
After Early Reaction; Heavi
ness in Coppers
By Associated Press
New York, June 17. Wall Street.—
Firmness ruled at the outset of to-day's
trading, leading issues adding to yes
terday s late gains. United States Steel
gave promise of resuming its former
prominence, opening with sales of 2,000
and 1,000 shares at a material frac
tional gain, while the preferred rose
a point. New York Central was
strongest of the railways with a o.ie
point advance. Coppers and motors
were moderately higher, but war speci
alties were variable, Westlnghouse de
clining over a point on extension of
ferings. Prices reacted before the end
of thev>alf hour.
The market showed a tendency to
harden after the early reaction, but
heaviness in coppers which followed a
sharp break in quotations for the re
fined metal in London caused another
reversal and gave partial confirmation
fo reports of price-cutting in this mar
ket. Metal shares were less heavy,
however, than certain of the more stan
dard Issues, Union Pacific, Reading and
Pennsylvania falling back a point each,
the latter on fairly large offerings.
There was a moderate revival of pool
operations in minor specialties, with
extreme dullness elsewhere. Bonds

Aurora Borealis Now
Flickering in North;
May Soon Be Visible
Electrical storms due to the Aurora
Borealis or Northern Lights, were de
ported to be in evidence this afternoon.
Local telegraph companies reported
wire trouble. The Aurora makes Its
appearance at intervals during the
year.
It is of electrical origin and when
strong can be seen at night in the
northern skies. The lights are fan
shape and run in streaks. Sometimes
these lights flicker and are called the
"merry dancers." Whenever these
lights appear, it is said the electrical
disturbances are distributed over vari
ous parts of the country, more strongly
in the north and west. It was too
cloudy last night to see the lights. No
report was received at tho local weath
er department that they were in evi
dence.

Young Men Are Using Enola
Reservoir as Bathing Resort
Enola, Pa., June 17.—The Pennsyl
vania railroad company at Enola has
during the past been considerable an
noyed by the young men of the town
using the reservoir in the rear of the
Y. M. C. A. building as a bathing re
sort. Last season it was necessary
for the company to place watchmen
both day and night at the reservoir to
keep them out. As the Dauphin Con
solidated Water Company is compelled
to use a part of this water at times
to help supply the town, they as well
as the railroad company are deter
mined that the bathers shall cease .us
ing the place.
