Automobile Notes
The world's record for mileage on
a gallon of gasoline was made in a
special four-cylinder Franklin in 1913.
The car went 83.5 miles. The other
day a new world's reeord for six
cylinder stock car was established
when, at New Haven, the engineering
department of Yale University super
vised a gallon mileage test in which a
Franklin five-passenger touring car
went 55 miles on one gallon. On the
same day 136 other Franklin cars
made similar tests. Forty-four cars
averaged 40 miles on one gallon. The
137 cars averaged 32.1 miles. Four of
the cars made over 50 miles on one
gallon. All the tests were official and
certified.
"The proper regulation of jitney
buses in the interest and safety of the
public is sure to come," says H. H.
Franklin. "It is hardly to be expected
that an enterprise of such rapid
growth would he free of objectionable
features. Nothing, however, has de
veloped which is serious enough to In
any way condemn the service. On the
contrary, city officials everywhere are
justified In giving the enterprise care
ful study with a view of encouraging
its development, because it offers won
derful possibilities In convenience and
time saving. Aside from Its conveni
ence, the service has the fundamental
advantage of Installation and mainten
ance without tearing up the streets,
tracking them, setting poles, etc.
"In every city there are some streets
which the people have succeeded In
keeping free of car tracks. Imagine a
modern city with no car tracks, poles
or overhead wires, but with an almost
silent, clean public transportation sys-.
tem. such as the automobiles will
finally develop. Such a city would in
deed be a place of beauty."
War order prosperity has a rival in
the domestic automobile business of
the United States. Everywhere auto
mobiles are being brought as never be
fore. For the first three months of
this year sales of automobiles in the
United States Increased 39 per cent,
over the same three months last year.
The Spring selling season, now at its
height, will probably show even a
greater Increase. Since February 15.
Franklin sales have Increased 107 per
cent, over same period last year.
