Lutheran Minister Attacks Modern Evangelism and "Billy Sunday" Methods Special to 7he Tel*graph Sellnsgrove, Pa., April 28.—Modern evangelism and "Billy" Sunday as Its leading exponent were attacked to-day at the opening session of the forty third semiannual convention of the Danville Conference of the Evangelical Lutheran Ministerium. The Rev. H. Douglas Spaeth, pastor of St. Mark's, Wllliamsport, led the discussion on "The Attitude of the Lutheran Church Toward Modern Evangelism." lie said the revival is not the normal way to win converts to the church, and after quoting from a "Billy" Sunday sermon declared: "This is a fair specimen of the mes sage hurled from tabernacle pulpits by the leading exponent of modern evan gelism. No one can deny its vigor, nor the fact that it contains considerable element of truth, but its glaring faults I and power for doing mischief are surely just as apparent. The trouble with 'Billy' Sunday is that he doesn't know when he has said enough. Ex aggeration is one of his chief stocks In trade, and exaggeration is just as false and immoral if it begins with a truth as if it begins with a lie. It is not true that most of the preachers are not converted, consecrated men; yet this is what 'Billy' Sunday implies and wishes his hearers to think when he cried: 'lf God could convert the preacher, the world would be saved.' It is not anywhere near the truth, and 'Billy' Sunday knows very well It is not true. 'Billy' is simply playing to the galleries." Recent Deaths in Central Pennsylvania Brownstown. Elias B.
